Supporting Actress Nominees Melissa Claire Egan (Annie, AMC) Genie Francis (Genevieve, Y&R) Nancy Lee Grahn (Alexis, GH) Elizabeth Hendrickson (Chloe, Y&R) Rebecca Herbst (Elizabeth, GH) Analysis Melissa Claire Egan gives a terrific performance as the unbalanced Annie Chandler. In this reel, Annie is begging the man she loves, JR, not to put her in Oakhaven (a psychiatric facility.) She starts by locking up his ex-wife in his attic, where there's a gas leak. She will do anything to keep JR and stay out the mental hospital. There's non-stop emotion and passion in her reel. She plays the scenes just as they should be played. She's angry and scary with the ex-wife. She's scared, quiet, and worried with JR. She, once again, proves why she always gets nominated. Genie Francis gives a good performance as the soon-to-be-a-divorcee, Genevieve Atkinson. In this reel, Genevieve is served divorce papers from her husband. She's honest with her feelings with him, without being over-the-top. Later, a man she's grown to love, Jack, shows up. She has a very difficult conversation with him, about: her dead daughter, her failed marriage, and her limited sexual experience. It's a very honest, understated performance. It's hard for me to say something negative about Genie Francis, because she's Genie Francis. (How can you say something bad about Laura Spencer?) I wish I would've seen a little more emotion from her. Nancy Lee Grahn gives a great performance as the highly-agitated Alexis Davis. In this reel, Alexis is confronted by a woman who she's never liked, Carly Jacks. Carly wants to talk about protecting their children from their father, Sonny. Alexis calls her out on her hypocrisy. She's honest. She's angry. She's sad for her presumed-dead friend, a.k.a., Carly's husband. Nancy plays the scene perefectly. Unfortunately, a lot of the time, your attention is drawn to Laura Wright. This could harm Nancy's chances of winning. Elizabeth Hendrickson does a good job of portraying the mother of a very sick child, Chloe Mitchell. In this reel, Chloe has to deel with the increased sickness of her daughter, Cordelia. Cordelia's father is nowhere to be seen. Chloe feels guilty that she couldn't find out what was happening, because she was with another man, and, her phone was off. She's angry with a lot of people, with good reason. The problem for me, is that she did display nearly enough sadness as she should've for a woman with an extremely ill daughter. She didn't display any real sadness until the end of the scene. She will not win. Having said that, she still gave a good performance, with a lot of emotion, even if it was the wrong choice to play the scenes angry. Rebecca Herbst gives a truly excellent portrayal as a mother of child on life support, Elizabeth Webber. Elizabeth's son, Jake, was hit by a car. She knows that there's no hope for him, but, she still doesn't know what to do. She has the baby's biological father, Jason, and the baby's recognized father, Lucky, telling her to give one of the child's kidneys to a baby with tumors on her kidney. She doesn't like the baby's mother. She doesn't want the doctors to cut into her son. She's completely devastated. She eventually gives permission for the doctors to give Jake's kidney to the baby. She gives a raw, open, amazing performance from start to finish. She shows the right amount of: sadness, anger, confusion, and desperation, that the scenes call for. She portrays the whole scene perfectly. Most especially, she adds just the right amount of strength and calmness, when she decides to let the baby have Jake's kidney. I would be surprised if she didn't win. Melissa Claire Egan gives another great performance. She also has "All My Children's" cancelation playing a big part in the way the judges vote. Genie Francis gave a good performance, but, not a truly great performance. Nancy Lee Grahn gave a great performance, but, the viewer's attention tends to go elsewhere. Elizabeth Hendrickson gave a good, but, at the same time, disappointing performance. Rebecca Herbst is truly the one to beat. My Choices/Likeliness Of Winning (From Most To Least) 1. Rebecca Herbst (Absolute perfection.) 2. Melissa Claire Egan (She was great. Don't be surprised if "All My Children" gets the pity vote here.) 3. Nancy Lee Grahn (She would've been number 2, had Laura Wright not been so present in the scene.) 4. Genie Francis (She would've been number 5, had Elizabeth played her scenes better. She'll also never be least likely to win, just because she's Genie Francis.) 5. Elizabeth Hendrickson (I always liked her, way back from her "All My Children" days. I think she could've done a lot better.) |

Since the previous reviewer briefly recapped the storylines, I will not worry about getting into recaps, and will just go straight to my thoughts and analysis.I watched these reels in random order. This is a tough category this year. Very tough. I had a hard time with my rankings. I actually went back and watched all the reels a second time because this is such a horse race. Here goes... |

just based on the recaps of the reels I might have to go change my vote to egan or herbst.

There is absoultley NO Way that Elizabeth Hendrickson is going to win this. It's so clear to me that it is in this order: 1. Herbst 2. Grahn 3. Eagan 4. Henrickson 5. Francis

I'm just getting a strong feeling that Nancy Lee Grahn is not winning this year... Herbst is most deserving based on submissions, but something says not to rule out Francis or Hendrickson just yet. Henrickson I think may surprise us all, as CBS is bound to win someplace and I think this may be it...

I've only watched Grahn's reel and I think it's an excellent choice. I don't think Wright is even a factor in her tape.I watched the reel after the comments, and I couldn't figure out why anyone would be drawn to Wright. She does nothing remotely interesting except flick her hair. Grahn commands attention from the first. I don't think Grahn will win, but it would nice to see her win because she's way overdue for her role on GH. |

^^ My issue with Grahn is that she only seems to bother putting in an effort for scenes like these which are written for her. Any and all other times she simply goes through the motions. I have much more respect for an actress like Lesli Kay for example, who is always present in her scenes even when they are not written to showcase her or her character. That, and the fact that I am not impressed by Grahn's lack of attendance at the ceremony, though I suppose one could give her the benefit of the doubt and assume she has a really good reason. But all that aside, I am curious to see how this race turns out. |

I think Nancy Grahn is probably just realistic about her chances of winning and thus decided not to attend. I'm also understanding that she seems to have some problems with the Academy; she seems to mention every year that she doesn't get her ballot, and this year mentioned that she wasn't invited to the nominees luncheon or something...

^^ Honestly, if she has so many problems with it then she should stop submitting her name. I have zero respect for the fact that she wants the support of the Emmys yet has no qualms about perpetually complaining about them. I realize I am behaving like a hater right now, but this is a dying award show and a dying industry and her public whining is only making it worse. This is not the time to be crying foul. This is the time to celebrate what is left of Daytime. If she feels she was treated unfairly, then she should remind herself of the decades of support the industry has given her and honour that by keeping her current complaints to herself given that it's obvious that nothing is going to change. Not to mention that when it comes to actors who have suffered at the hands of the Emmy process, her name rarely, if ever, comes up. To be recognized in this medium you have to have (perhaps among other things) exceptional skill, exceptional work ethic, and more than your fair share of luck. Grahn, especially in recent years, has shown that she has good (but not great) skill and a mood-dependent work ethic, and IMO the Emmys accurately reflect her situation. |
