BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR IN A MUSICAL, AND THE WINNER IS: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gv_ruTAVDJ0&list=PLAC073D95FF726DD1&index=5&feature=plpp_video Last Year's Winner: John Larroquette, How to Succeed in a Business Without Really Trying Now it's the supporting musical actor's time to be rewarded. This award has gone to men such as Michael Cerveris (nominee again this year) and Boyd Gaines. The nominees this year include a previous winner (Cerveris), a previous nominee and three newcommers. The runner up in this Michael McGrath for playing Cookie in "Nice Work If You Can Get It", his performance is truly such a great comic one with his impecable timing mixed with his great singing talents, he has some great scenes with all his fellow co-stars stealing nearlyevery scene he was in. In the end my winning performance was Philip Boykin for histruly remarkable turn as Crown in the revival of "The Gershwins' Porgy and Bess", his performance as this strong brutish violent man was a great match againist the weak addict Bess, his singing was so strong and made such an impression on me that I was like you is this because I enjoyed hating how horrible he was, his singing matched Audra's so much his voice the male version of her voice in my opnion. |

BEST SOUND DESIGN (Musical & Play), AND THE WINNER IS: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xudehOT1ayE Last Year's Winner: Brian Ronan, The Book of Mormon Now back to the technical categories with the award for sound in a play or musical. Even though there were three plays i could have easily nominated for sound I thought these five musical's did a better job of handeling the sound. The nominees this year included four new musical's but one revival. The runner up in this category was John Shivers' work on the new musical "Bonnie & Clyde", even though most of the critics bashed on this musical I thought along with the musical and performances they made the material much better than I thought ever, the sound also came in handy when the ending of the shoot out was done quite well for stage. And now to the winner which was an easy choice to make because i loved this musical so much, this sound design was done by Clive Goodwin for his masterful work for "Once", yes it may be simple to choice this musical because i loved it so much, this sound designer had to work well with the dance musicians as well as the irish music that was involved in the musical. |

BEST LIGHTING DESIGN (Musical & Play), AND THE WINNER IS: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_AoymgMpTV8 Last Year's Winner: Paule Constable, War Horse Lighting design is one of the most important parts to a musical/play's success as it helps to evoke the emotions of the material, it can come from a simple colour of the light or the movement of the lights. I have given this award mainly to musicals but a few plays have done such great lighting that they just easily were the winners. Four of the nominees this year were musicals but one was a play just to set the record first. The runner Hugh Vanstone for his great and obvious work on "Ghost: The Musical", the work in this musical had to do with the lights was very important to the story for making the audience know who was dead and alive with just a simple blue light andchanging lights around them to evoke the feel of new york. In the end Kenneth Posner for his work on the only play nominee in this category, and that play is "Other Desert Cities", some may disagree with me about this choice, Ithought that the simple lighting of a normal looking house, i thought that the lights worked well because it did the most important job lights should do which is not make me pay more attention to what is going on with the actors and that is why Ichoose it as the winner. |

BEST LEAD ACTOR IN A MUSICAL, AND THE WINNER IS: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8RebiKimpx4 Last Year's Winner: Tony Sheldon, Priscella, Queen of the Desert Now to start with the leading acting awards, the first one will be for the leading musical men. Ihave given this award to types such as hollywood stars (Hugh Jackman) also modern working music men (Norbert Leo Butz) and also tv actors making abig impression on stage (Sean Hayes). The men this year include two previous nominees with multiple nominations, the other three are first time nominees. The runner up in this category is Noram Lewis for his emotional and physical transformation into Porgy in "The Gershwins' Porgy and Bess", Norm has been one of my favourite singers most notable for his Javert version, but his porgy was so emotional because his limp and handeling of Bess was such as strong and memorable perfoamance that i cannot imagine anybody else doing this role which such persision and deep enotional pull that he had over me. In the end my winning choice like Lewis is a first time nominee Steve Kazee for his take on Guy in the movie turned musical "Once", his performance like Norm's wasvery emotional for me because you felt for each character in this musical especially Kazee's character which is just named Guy. His singing of modern style songs was really natural and told the story of these two lovers very well. Then his mastering of the accent was fun to watch because me of course being irish know the way the person should sound when they are talking. |

BEST LEAD ACTOR IN A PLAY, AND THE WINNER IS: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sSyIdMK99BQ (I Could not find any interviews or videos of the winner, so here is a review) Last Year's Winner: Mark Rylance, Jerusalem Now it's time for the category which for me always has some of the strongest performances by some of our best stage actors working presentl. The nominees this year include two past nominees (Oscar winner Hoffman and oscar nominee Lithgow) and the other nominees are first time nominees (Oscar nominee Jackson, Emmy nominee Dancy and British Comedian Corden). These men are doing really great work I could choose any of them to win. The runner up in this category is James Corden for his hilariously comedic broadway breakthrough in "One Man, Two Guvnors", yes the most comedic performance beats most of these dramatic performances. He really made such an impression of me with his rolling on the ground and also his speaking to the crowd was very connected and made him standout this year. The winner in this category isplaying a part played by many men before him and even given some of these men the awards they deserved Phillip Seymour Hoffman for his interpritaton of Willy in the classic Arthur Miller play "Death of a Salesman", yes this may be the easy choice to make but it is a truly deserved award winning performance, Hoffman plays this character so emotional that from the first entrance of Hoffman on stage the look on his face really made me feel sorry for the character and that was all down to the amazing talents of Hoffman, he truly is one of our greats working today on Stage, Film and TV. |

BEST REVIVAL OF A MUSICAL, AND THE WINNER IS: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QwFxf9lAzhA&list=PLAC073D95FF726DD1&index=1&feature=plpp_video Last Year's Winner: Anything Goes This is the first of the four big awards, this award as said above is for a musical revival. I have given this award to great revivals such as 2010's "La Cage aux Folles" and 2004's "Assassins". These nominees include two Andrew Lloyd Webber musicals, a Gershwin musical that was not well liked when it first came out in the early 20th century and a classic Sondheim musical. The runner up this year is the revival of "The Gershwins' Porgy and Bess", yes this revival may have won the tony but I still think one of it's fellow nominee's was better. This revival made the musical better by shortning the material from 4 hours to 2 1/2 hours, the director made ever aspect of it better by using the actors in a way that elevated the production letting see performances such as Audra, Norman, David and Phillip (winner). The winner in this category is the many times revived "Follies", this revival is special for me because it made it's four leads standout as well as using all of the cast and setting really well. I enjoyed this more than Porgy and Bess was because the revival really made me love the music even more than i did when i saw other productions of it. |

BEST REVIVAL OF A PLAY, AND THE WINNER IS: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q0a1n_VBXkg&list=PLAC073D95FF726DD1&index=2&feature=plpp_video Last Year's Winner: The Normal Heart Now for a revival's of play's turn. This award has gone to stage productions such as 2004's "A Raisin in the Sun" and 2010's "Fences". The nominees this year include the two most celebrated american plays, a play that never played on broadway but played in LA years ago and the final nominee being a play of the 70's that is not dated because it feels like it is telling the story of politics nowadays. The runner up is the production of Arthur Miller's american classic "Death of a Salesman", the tony winning revival is the runner up for me because it did have some problems (minor) and I enjoyed my experince seeing my winner more, with great direction from a theatre legend and performances given by Hoffman, Garfield (BOTH WON AWARDS FROM ME) and also Emond. Rudin took this play and did a great job making it more known than modern audiences would know. In the end the winner is a play that came out in the 70's, and it still is relevant in modern times, this play is "Gore Vidal's The Best Man", this cast I don't even know where to start because we had two of the greatest stage actors (Nominated this year AngelaLLansbury also James Earl Jones bringing his great talents as well) then there are the emmy winning Tv stars (Candice Bergen, John Larroquette and Eric McCormack) then the final cast member of revelence is Kerry Butler making her broadway play debut. Then there is the play which is a laugh out loud great time in the theatre. Seeing this play made me appreciate the talents of Lansbury and Jones even more because I know that actor's like these are starting to go away. |

BEST LEAD ACTRESS IN A MUSICAL, AND THE WINNER IS: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nKSICWy77ak&list=PLAC073D95FF726DD1&index=1&feature=plpp_video Last Year's Winner: Sutton Foster, Anything Goes Now back to the acting awards with the first of the four major acting awards. This award has gone to women such as gone to broadway legends like Patti Lupone and Bernadette Peters but also to people making their broadway debut like Catherine Zeta-Jones. The nominees this year include three previous nominees (Audra McDonald the only previous winner, three time nominee Kelli O'Hara and also four time nominee Jan Maxwell) the other two nominees are first time nominees. The ruhner up in this cateogry is Laura Osnes for her original protrayal of real life Bonnie Parker in "Bonnie & Clyde", yes this may be a choice to make that alot of people would disagree with but I thought she gave her best in this show and I was so said when it was closed early. The score was great for her as she got to use all her range, she was sexy and suductive which is what the character was, her best moment on stage was when she sang "Dyin' Ain't So Bad" and she almost brokedown on stage. In the end the winner was Audra McDonald for her impressive turn as the addicted Bess in the retelling of "The Gershwins' Porgy and Bess", even though all the nominees where great Audra gave in my opnion the best performance of the year in a play of Musical. She really made this part better than I thought it could, but she is Audra so she can sing or do anything, I felt like crying at every note that came out of her mouth because it was beautiful due to the voice of McDonald, Her greatest song was her rendition of the classic "Summertime", she got to use her full range and is truly one of the greatest musical performances I've ever seen on the stage and there is so much I could say about her but I'm not goin to ramble on. In any case thisis in my opnion McDonald's best performance she has ever given. |

BEST LEAD ACTRESS IN A PLAY, AND THE WINNER IS: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g1J2IbgLKuE&list=PLAC073D95FF726DD1&index=2&feature=plpp_video Last Year's Winner: Frances McDormand, Good People This award is the most competitve acting award because each of these women are worthy of winning the award. This year's nominees include two previous nominees (Nina Arianda and Stockard Channing), the other three women are all first time nominees who are making their broadway debut's with these performances (Tracie Bennett, Rachel Griffiths and Nicole Ari Parker). This award has gone to women such as stage legend Vanessa Redgrave and also women making their broadway debuts like Deanna Dunagan. The runner up this ear is for the second year in a row Nina Arianda for her stellar work in the new play "Venus in Fur", the role of Vanda is a greatly written female role because she has control over Dancy (also nominated for the play), she speaks in many dialects as well as handling comic timing with dramatic tones at the same time, Arianda does so great in this role that I cannot imagine anybody else doing it and to say another thing Arianda was so close to the winner so I was happy she won the Tony on Sunday. The winning performance was given by Tracie Bennett for her protrayel of the legendary Judy Garland in "End of the Rainbow", this is the best play performance I saw this year, she played so well I really thought that I saw the real Judy Garland on stage. The play not as good as the other performances plays but Bennett was amazing. When she breaks out into song I feel like I wish i could have seen Judy Garland like on stage but at the same time i saw thank you to Bennett for making a dream of many people come true to see her on stage. Bennett has made a big leap on the for front and cannot wait to see what she does next and also see if she can do better than she has done. |

BEST MUSICAL, AND THE WINNER IS: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XZeT3uyL4MY&list=PLAC073D95FF726DD1&index=3&feature=plpp_video Last Year's Winner: The Book of Mormon With these final two awards I hope that you all loved all these awards. The award for best musical is my favourite because I really love going to see musicals whether they are revivals or originals. The nominees this year include three movies turned into stage musicals as well as a musical based on the life of two america's most famous outlaws. I have given this award to musicals that can be big box office success such as 2004's "Wicked" and ones more critically aclaimed like 2009's "Next to Normal". The runner up in this category is musical based on a movie that was a flop, this musical is "Newsies: The Musical", the big disney musical was better on stage because the songs were better being done live and also the new songs added made it better, the choreography done by (Best Choreography winner) Christopher Gattelli was well done. Then there was the addition of new plot as well as taking away some which obviously made it a musical worth watching. In the end the winning musical like Newsies is based on a movie (A much better film), that musical is "Once", the movie One was a special gem just like this musical is. The songs were as great as they always were, then there is the cast I have to talk about it, it starts with Steve Kazee (BEST ACTOR WINNER) and also Cristin Milioti who breaks your heart as well as being the heart and soul of the show. This musical also involved other great qualities that made it so special and you cannot believe how happy I was when it won 8 tonys last sunday. I gave Once 4 awards the most of any musical revival or original. |

BEST PLAY, AND THE WINNER IS: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zyl9vCL7ZSo Last Year's Winner: War Horse To the final award we go, if anybody has been reading my winners thank you now it's sad that's its come to an end but there is next year and I've already seen a play of this season (the revival Harvey). The nominees this year include play brought over from the west end, two plays that started off broadway and the last nominee won the pulitzer prize for drama last year. I like to think that my choices for best play are good and I have given them to plays such as 2008's "August: Osage County" but also the comedic plays like 2009's "God of Carnage". The runner up in thie category is the pulitzer prize winning play that also won the tony for best play, that play is "Clybourne Park", this play is the one of the nominees that really talks about issues, such as racisim, but this play added humour which made it enjoyable to watch, all the main actor's were really standout's with one getting nominated (Christina Kirk). In winning play in this category was written by Jon Robin Baitz, that play is "Other Desert Cities", this play connected with me the most because the family problems are always amuzimng to me especially because in this play we are told something happened in the past and it was great to see all the wacky things that become of this novel written about the family's past, all the actor's did great work with four of them getting nominated (Channing, Griffiths, Sadoski and even Light winning her category), then there is how the play handle's comedy well but at the same time there are still some moving scenes. Other Desert Cities won four awards this year the most of of any plays (Play, Director, Supporting Actress & Lighting Design). PS. Tomorrow I will put a video of the nominees and winners online. |
