OUTSTANDING TALK SHOW HOST Anderson Cooper, Anderson, September 19, 2011, Episode 1010, The Story of My Mom: Gloria Vanderbilt. Running Time: 41:52 Cooper submitted the same episode sent for Outstanding Talk Show. Anderson gets very emotional discussing his brother’s suicide, and shows a very gentle side when discussing his mother’s history. They have a great interaction with one another. The only downside is that Cooper does not interact with the audience much in this submission, and when Kathy Griffin comes on, she takes over her segment. Dr. Lisa Masterson, Jillian Michaels, Dr. Andrew Ordon, Dr. Jim Sears, Wendy Walsh, Dr. Travis Stork, The Doctors, May 2, 2011, #D3143, TRUTH or DARE: We Dare You to Get Healthy, Running Time: 40:13 The Doctors have great interaction with one another and are very active in taking part in many of the dares presented. Not sure it is strong enough for a win for them, though. Dr. Mehmet Oz, The Dr. Oz Show, November 23, 2011, Episode #3-058 Dr. Oz rises to the occasion and goes out to health clinics and holds uninsured patients’ hands when dealing with some of the diseases that are affecting them. He is especially sensitive to a woman who does not have health insurance and who has a tumor growing out of the side of one of her breasts. He is also very informative and discusses in great detail some of the medical ailments that affect individuals with regards to pacemakers and heart attacks. I’d say he is the frontrunner. Rachael Ray, Rachael Ray, Episode 6038, November 2, 2011 Ray submitted an episode showcasing her travels to Mexico and her daring rock climbing, and then spends time making tequilas with her husband; her interaction with him is fun, but she and next guest Eva Longoria also have a nice rapport and they discuss everything from tequilas to Desperate Housewives to a serious subject of child labor (which is the focus on a DVD Longoria helped produce). She then lets viewers on a trip she and her husband took in Mexico where they are joined by another companion, Bert, climbing rocks and sky diving. Ray then spends the rest of the episode serving up a pulled pork Mexican dish. Ray is entertaining and knowledgeable throughout and is a threat to win. Regis and Kelly, Live With Regis and Kelly, November 18, 2011 The hosts submitted Regis’ last day on the air, and there are many emotional tributes, including looking at some of the past guests mocking Regis. There is also a segment where the cast of Rent sings to him, tales from his wife of their honeymoon, and Kelly’s emotional letter to him. It’s a fun, emotional-filled episode, but I’m not sure that this is a “hosting” submission, rather than a show submission.
RANKINGS: 1. Dr. Mehmet Oz, The Dr. Oz Show 2. Rachael Ray, Rachael Ray 3. Anderson Cooper, Anderson 4. Regis and Kelly, Live With Regis and Kelly 5. Dr. Lisa Masterson, Jillian Michaels, Dr. Andrew Ordon, Dr. Jim Sears, Wendy Walsh, Dr. Travis Stork, The Doctors |

Kelly reading the letter has stuck out with me of all the ones I saw here. Dr. Oz was very good in his submission but I think it should be Regis and Kelly! |

I don't think the format of Regis and Kelly's submission will hurt them. I think most everyone understands the usual format of "Live" and won't watch the farewell episode wondering what they do on a daily basis. What that episode does more importantly is say to voters, "Last chance to honor Regis Philbin in this category." Judges don't always respond to sentiment in that way, but sometimes it's hard to bet against it.

I do think from a sentimental point of view, Regis and Kelly could win. I just feel that for a host to win, he or she should be a bit more interactive with the audience and subject matter, specifically how Dr. Oz and Rachael Ray were; I just felt they "hosted" their episodes perfectly. It's not that Regis and Kelly did not do a great job, it's just that I thought Regis and Kelly's submission was more so a great example of "Outstanding Talk Show" rather than "Outstanding Talk Show Host." |

Talk Show Host is not the most "sexy" category but there still was some good submissions here. Anderson Anderson Cooper, Host An episode devoted to Cooper's Mom, icon Gloria Vanderbilt. We get some touching moments as the episode digs deep into the personal life of Vandebilt. Discussion of her childhood, death of her husband, Anderson's father, and the suicide of her son, Anderson's brother leads to some very tender moments. Thankfully Kathy Griffin shows up to and some energy and spark to the hour. Coooper is not really hosting here and to be honest he is outshined by his mother. The Doctor Oz Show Dr. Mehmet Oz, Host Dr. Oz is at his hard hitting best as this submission focuses on the uninsured crisis in this conuntry. Dr. Oz owns the hour that is full of heartfelt and challenging stories about people who are desperate for medical care. Live with Regis and Kelly Regis Philbin and Kelly Ripa, Host It's Regis' last day and viewers get an emotional ride thru all of the clips, stories, and tributes to Philbin. The hour's most touching moment is Ripa reading her tribute to Regis. While I was touched my emotional ride this is not a reel that showcases any hosting prowess. The Doctors Dr. Travis Stork, Dr. Lisa Masterson, Dr. Drew Ordon, Dr. James Sears, Hosts Here comes the JV team. Compared to the serious hour offered by Dr. Oz, this hour fluff piece just looked a little sad. Medical truth or dare, where medical facts are contrasted with medical dares, just doesn't cut it. Rachael Rachael Ray, Host If you think Rachael Ray's personality is infectious and perky then any trip into her world will be a fun ride. Rachael's vacation to Mexico is the focus of this submission and some gal-pal/cooking moments with guest Eva Longorio keeps things light and easy. Seeing Ray repel down the side of a cliff was funny but for me this hour lives and dies on Ray's personality and that has never really worked for me. Prediction 1. Oz Mehmet 2. Regis Philbin and Kelly Ripa 3. Anderson Cooper 4. Rachael Ray 5. The Doctors There should be no contest here as Dr. Oz is the class of the field. Regis and Kelly have a shot since their submission was one heartfelt good-bye. |
