And they are back! Great stuff, if not an instant classic on the level of something like " Crawl Space." |

It's the season premiere of Breaking Bad, and man was it great. All the acting was spot on, and it was an unusually humouristic episode for Breaking Bad (though nothing will ever beat Jesse's "Blowfishin' this up" moment, that was the most hilarious thing I've ever seen). But there was time for some emotional moments. In the final scene, when Walt hypocrytically hugs Skyler and says "I forgive you" - as if he was a saint who never did anything wrong - was great and I am really looking forward to next week's episode. One down, seven to go. "Live Free or Die" Grade. A- |

This was a very nice, low-key episode. If i was grading on Breaking Bad's potential, I wouldn't necessarily give it an "A", but that's just because I know this season will get crazier and crazier...and I'm really looking forward to it. The opening (flash forward) and closing moments were truly haunting. And it was just so thrilling to see Walt slowly, yet surely, turn into a complete badass villian. Bryan Cranston can do no wrong. And, of course, this episode also had a lot of LOL moments, most notably the giant magnent scene. I also cracked up when Skylar visited Ted in the hospital ("Good.") Ted got what was coming and he is lucky he is still alive! I also really liked the scene with the Walt Jr. and just his weird excitement over all the events surrounding him. It was a somewhat strange, yet poignant, way to begin the "family scene".. He probably needed two bowls of cereal to calm him down. So, yeah, this should be a great 7 weeks! Pot Pot Pot Ledom |

Playing devil's advocate here, Sepinwall has only seen the first two episodes of Season 5. Keeping that in mind, there is a very good possibility that Banks will get an even better tape later in the season. On the other hand, the fact that Gus's death has allowed Mike to get better material is exciting in its own right. Looking back at Mike's first appearance in Season 2's finale "ABQ," it is amazing to see how Gilligan and his team took the role of "the bald cleaner," which would've been a one-and-done character in any other show, and made him one of the coolest character over the age of fifty on television.

The first twenty was superb, intense filmmaking filmmaking. The remainder was a lil to madcap for me. Still good, but some of the comedic notes didn't fit. The Boston critic was on to something when he claimed that Walter's scheme was scheme was a bit much. Overall, it was an entertaing, well-paced premiere that sets the season up rather than just resolve the finale like last season's premiere. With Gud no longer at the center of everything the writers are freen to play around once again. I wouldn't be surprised if this ended up being the best season since the second. But no pressure. Fearless Super Walt is difficult to relate to. His hardening is an inevitable and realistic change, but his stone face and unrelenting genius seems like a silly and unnecessary adaptation. Bryan Cranston acting is keeping the character is mostly keeping the character in two despite some eyerolling one-liners.

"Yeah, bitch! MAGNETS! Ohhhh!" Oh indeed. Very compelling season premiere. I'll have to watch this episode again soon, b/c there were parts to it that didn't register much b/c it's been so long since I watched last season's finale. Walt's arrogance has reached epic proportions, and that was jarring to watch unfold. Walt's scenes opposite Skylar and Saul were incredibly unnerving and tense. "I forgive you." Jonathan Banks effortlessly stole the show, and I can't wait to see what's in store next for Mike. If this can bring on possible Emmy talk for him next year, then I'm all for that. The flashforward opening scene intrigued me the most. There's already speculation that this will play out as a "last day in the life of Walter White" scenario throughout the next two seasons, with a haggard and extremely nihilistic Walt plotting some kind of assassination attempt or suicidal stunt of some sort? With nothing left to lose (and with that cough in the bathroom exchange. . . possible cancer relapse?), he goes out in one blaze of glory with his family and business associates long gone from the picture.

The show still looks awesome, that car scene in the desert was great, but come on, this wasn't even up there with the best episodes the show has done. I know it's a premiere and it wasn't supossed to have the same weight middle or final episodes have had, but it wasn't that special. I did love Jesse here, I thought he was hilarious as was Mike. I agree that Walt has reached a point of no return, he's in deep and won't go back to his old self. He's arrogant, he's an asshole, he's mean and extremely scary. I loooooved that scene with Saul, Odenkirk really sold that final moment and then with Skylar, the "I forgive you" was very creepy. I could give this episode an A just because it means the show is coming back, but I'm so pissed off by the 8 episode money grabbing break that I won't because it wasn't a Grade A episode at all. I will say that when the flashforward started, it made me think that maybe last season should've been the last one (the fanboy in me said "no way!" of course). Everything will be different and it will be a new Walt, new Jesse and Mike along for the ride. It's not going to be entirely connected as the previous four seasons were with each other. I watched them all again back to back this week, finished on saturday, and they really seemed like one whole story, this one feels like it will be something else. |

I'm gonna be in minority but I found this episode to be pretty boring. I'm glad the show is back but it should grab my interest from the first second... but it didn't. |

According to TVbytheNumbers, last night's episode scored a series high in total viewers (2.9 mil for the 10:00 airing, 3.5 mil for the 10:00 and 11:30 airings combined) and in the 18-49 demo (1.5 rating for the 10:00 airing). Pretty impressive, especially considering it is in its 5th season and considering the DISH-AMC battle.

Not sure about that... that guy who gave The Dark Knight Rises it's first rotten review on rottentomatoes is probably more hated. What do you think, lol? |

Great episode, but I'm having trouble remembering the details of season 4. Can someone sum up the whole cigarette thing? I know they were trying to kill Gus, but then I thought the kid ended up smoking it and that's why he was in the hospital? And who is this woman? Have we seen her before? |

All I can say is this: We have our first real contender for Drama Supporting Actor next year in Jonathan Banks. This was his episode, and he owned it. Hard to believe he wasn't even supposed to be in the show, were if not for Bob Odenkirk being unavailable for the season 2 finale.
