I would have put her roles in ESOTSM and The Reader in, but we all know how that'd go....all the fanboys would go for the former and bash the latter, and then everyone would follow suit. Boring. Like sheep. What I'm interested in seeing is some very constructive discussion about her career without focusing on fanboys favorites to love and favorites to hate. Let's try to think outside of the box, shall we? Oh, and one question: Do you feel her role in Finding Neverland was a leading performance (she was nominated as lead at BAFTA) or supporting (she was nominated as supporting at the Broadcast Film Critics Awards)? |

Winslet was wonderful in TITANIC but I voted for REVOLUTIONARY ROAD because it seems like a lot of people hated that movie, which I thought was a brilliant and scathing indictment of the American suburban dream circa 1955... In the immortal words of Langston Hughes, What happens to a dream deferred? Does it dry up

Despite the fact that many feel that The Reader received undue critical acclaim, I think Winslet was outstanding in that film. I've never quite understood why some feel the need to bash her performance. The movie absolutely had its flaws, but she however was great. Nevertheless, my favourite Winslet role would have to be Sarah in Little Children. Such a f**ked up movie, but so fantastic at the same time. But of the five that you have included in the poll above, I went with Rose simply because any other actress would have made the character completely unlikeable. But Winslet's performance certainly pulled at the heartstrings every step of the way, even when she was being a spoilt little bitch. |

I know you didn't put it as an option but Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind is no question her greatest role and, in my opinion, Jim Carrey's as well. I'm glad it won Original Screenplay and got Winslet the nom, but what I don't understand is how it wasn't a lock for nominations in Picture, Director and Lead Actor, plus technical noms in Cinematography and Editing. It makes no sense. With that said, I thought her performance in The Reader was good as well. That season, I preferred her performance in Revolutionary Road but the only reason those two performances are compared is simply because they came out in the same year; other than that, they couldn't be more opposite. |

I'll be the Sheep then. Her best role. Titanic. Her best performance. Eternal Sunshine. And I loved her in The Reader. The courtroom scene especially was imo one of her strongest acting moments captured on film. |

Best role is Eternal Sunshine, but from the choices I'd go with Revolutionary Road. That's the performance I nominated her for in 2008. |

Such true words... at least it got Screenplay. Personally one of my favorite oscar wins ever. I agree with everyone mentioning Little Children. I also like the movie very much, but she is the best thing about it. As for the poll, of those I'd pick Rev Road. Her last scene in that movie is so very impressive without being loud and showy.

Sorry about the cliche, but the book "Little Children" was way better than the movie, and this coming from a fan of Todd Field's "In the Bedroom." He seemed to try to make the book into the movie. Instead, he could have created a whole new narrative by rearranging some of the scenes/chapters in the book. The role of Kathy also needed to be more prominent. Rather than focus on the romance, they should have focused on the lives of Sarah and Brad ("Todd" in the book) and how their relationships with friends/family were affected by their emotional detachment, and the decisions they make. Slutty Kaye should have been more prominent. Also, the role of Sarah was initially offered to Vera Farmiga. It is rare that I say this, but I feel that Farmiga would have been better in this role than Winslet. She has a much more direct and confident aura about her. |

Charlie Kaufman's screenplay for Adaptation was the one he should have won for. I mean, he literally inserted himself into the film. How genius is that? Also, it would have been cool to see the fictional Donald Kaufman "accept" the award.... |

How should that have worked? Nicholas Cage accepting it? While I like Adaptation. very much I don't fully agree with you. The criticism he voices within the film about writing himself into the story does not relativize it. I got into a heated discussion with my roomate over this once, whether it is clever and innovative to build his writer's block into the film or just lazy and uncreative. But the fact alone that the screenplay can be the ground for such a discussion, indicates that Kaufman achieved something equal to his other screenplays. He creates ambiguity, leaving it up to the viewer to interpret his stories and motivations. ESOSM however, is his best screenplay, to me, because it is not questionable whether it is innovative or not. It simply is, the structure, the topic of erasing someone from your mind, his characters, the episodes he creates within the story, the lines he uses. It all comes together as one great masterpiece. But that's only how I see it. I know a number of people who just can't see past the confusing nature of the storytelling. I spent enough time watching the film by now, to unravel the storyline and realize how much time it must have cost Kaufman to create this complex and logical time structure. I discover something new each time I watch it, which speaks for mastery.
