There's one line in the film (that's also featured in the trailer) that really bugs me. It sounds like she's saying the line one way, but it sounds like it's supposed to be said another way. The line as read: "What do you mean I always sings lead?" How I think it's supposed to be read: "What do you mean? I always sings lead!" What do you think? |

You have to watch the film to see what she meant. Because it depends on the context the line came in. For instance, if someone has told Beyonce's character to sing lead, then how you think it should be read is correct. But, if someone is accusing her of stealing the spotlight from other characters and tells her "You always sing lead", then the way she said it is correct. |

She was terrific when she was singing. Those are like 'lines', are they not? The non-singing lines, well, we've all seen her in her other films, right?

Of course Miss Hudson don't deserved an Oscar, but with that category is easy know why she won, even if her the acting was something between okay and mediocre she sang a hell out of this world in a ICONIC role and her co-nominees were 2 foreign language actresses, a child and a two years earlier winner that could not win again in the same category. I put Hudson in #4, behind of Kinkuchi (#1) and Barraza (#2), and depending in how I feel about the category fraud of Cate Blanchett she can rank at #3, but I rather watch Jennifer than Abigail, I just don't think there is something special in her performance, Collette was a better supporting from LMS and if she had been nominated would been a more worthy winner. |

I thought Jennifer Hudson certainly delivered an Oscar winning performance. First things first, she was miles above the rest of the competition in her category. Cate Blanchett is of course phenomenal (I may be a little biased here as I'm an Aussie), but her performance in Notes on a Scandal, while very good, did not warrant an Oscar win. Again, Adriana Barraza was fine in Babel, but it wasn't worthy of winning. As for Rinko Kikuchi, call me ignorant but I just didn't get her performance. I appreciate subtlety but she just spent far too much time pulling a sad face and crying. Nothing to write home about there. As for Abigail Breslin, she was gorgeous in Little Miss Sunshine but if she won an Academy Award for that it would have been a joke. For Christ sake, even her co-star said that she shouldn't win! But back to Hudson. She sang phenomonally, and handled the acting scenes very well. I know people bitch about the fact that she only won because of her singing, but there are SO MANY Oscar winning actors who only won because they had a scene or two in the film where they could flip their sh** and cry and yell and throw their body around. How is Hudson's win any different? She was good in 80% of her performance, but then in the other 20% (songs like And I'm Telling You... and I Am Changing in particular) she completely owned it. In regards to what this thread was about - line delivery. I think her line delivery was correct. She places emphasis on the word "always" which signifies that she is making a statement about how she usually is the lead singer. I can see how it could be misconstrued that she is asking a question, but I think the way in which she phrases "always" it clears things up there. |

Yep, but Alan Arkin said that because he knew that it wouldn't be good for her to win Oscar that early. And he was right in that department. Based on performance I would still vote for her. All in all odd year in that category. |

For me she only won because of her singing, the role and weak competition, when Hudson wasn't singing she wasn't a good actress, imo. And that's come from someone who really love that woman. |

This post for me sums up Jennifer Hudson's performance. You are completely right. It was not a terrible performance by any means and it perplexes me why so many people (who probably haven't seen the film) don't like it. People underrate singing performances or performances from musicals in general but Jennifer Hudson should have won the Oscar and is not a bad actress at all. |

Judy Garland should have won at least one Oscar (not counting her juvenile award). She would have been a very fine winner for A Star is Born (Wyman had already won for Johnny Belinda, and I'd have given Kelly a supporting Oscar for Rear Window or Dial M for Murder). Hudson's win is not a low point in the category. Blanchett gave the best performance in the category, but she was co-lead with Dench. Hudson's more of a borderline case, so I'm fine with her being in supporting. Frankly, I thought the category that year was weak, but compared to the last two years I'd say it was a worthy group. |

I remember watching the film, relaxing and feeling engaged by the film until that line. It completely threw me out of the film. |
