Same as Supporting Actress thread. Which one should give it back. It's definitely between Arkin and Gooding Jr. for me on this one. |

Why did you put Christian Bale on the list? That's insane. He was terrific.
No, non riuscirai mai a capire cosa c'è scritto. Ma non importa.

I'm not sure, I think I just wanted to fill up some spaces like Michael Caine (whom I really don't know why I put him on either). I did really enjoy Bale, but according to many posters on here he was over the hill and "hammy" or something. |

This one was hard, but I came upon my decision in the following way. Alan Arkin may not have been the best Supporting Actor in the movie, but he was still an important fixture to the story. Cuba Gooding Jr should definitely give his Oscar back but I didn't vote for him because he was, at least, a little humorous and entertaining. Michael Caine wasn't bad, but his competition was stronger. Christian Bale being on the list surprises me but I am indifferent on him winning. Tim Robbins is probably the only one on the list that I actually felt was a deserving win, though I am not passionate about his performance. I think Tommy Lee Jones was good in The Fugitive and it was a solid and even entertaining performance but the fact that it gained traction with some critics and won the Globe and Oscar is baffling. He deserved it more for JFK two years earlier. I voted for George Clooney. The only reason he won was because he wasn't going to win Director or Screenplay for GOODNIGHT AND GOOD LUCK (I honestly would have given him Screenplay) so this was a consolation prize and he even mentioned that in his speech to some degree! His work was not even memorable, same with the film....I remember him being tortured at some point but that is it. I don't see any merit in it other than it was a "we don't want you to go home empty-handed" win. |

I can't remember the exact quote but Humphrey Bogart once said of Betty Hutton that she wasn't a very good actress because you could see the cogs working, which is exactly how I felt about Tim Robbins terrible performance in 'Mystic River'. It was the most unnatural bit of acting I've seen in ages, which is weird because he's a perfectly capable actor who was absolutely wretched in an otherwise great film. Stumbling about, mumbling to himself begging for an Oscar it was just embarrassing. Having said that none of the other noms were particular stand outs. Michael Caine was also terrible in 'Cider House Rules'. He only has one act which he's been pedalling for nearly 50 years. God know hiow how has 1 Oscar nevermind 2??? He's an easy 5th for me in '99 behind even Tom Cruise who I loathe with a passion in everything he's ever done. Jude or Hayley should have won. Tommy Lee Jones was obviously a ridiculous win but there's nothing wrong with the actual performance. His beating Leo and Ralph though was preposterous |

All of the aforementioned men were more deserving than George Chakiris. |

Robbins should give his to Benicio del Toro or Alec Baldwin. Cuba Gooding Jr should give his to William H. Macy even though Macy belonged in Lead. Jones should give his to Ralph Fiennes (Leo or Pete Postlethwaite would also be more deserving) Caine should give his to Tom Cruise, Haley Joel Osment or Jude Law. Clooney should give his to Jake Gyllenhaal. Arkin and Bale weren't my choices but I don't have real problems with their wins. |

I love George Clooney and all, but yes, Jake Gyllenhaal clearly should have won for Brokeback Mountain. It's a travesty that film didn't win more awards.

George Clooney from this list. But no one can beat Don Ameche in this category! |

Arkin was fine, but his performance was nothing worthy of a nomination much less a win. He clearly only won because he was one of the oldest veterans that year. I think the only one in that film who deserved an acting nomination was Steve Carrell, whom I really enjoyed. |

George Chakiris is probably my least favorite Supporting Actor win ever. He had no business even being nominated let alone actually winning for it. I am baffled as to why he was getting traction way back then. I mean, yes, you can contribute it to riding the coat-tails of West Side Story's massive success and the fact that he wasn't exactly terrible as opposed to the work of Richard Beymer or Natalie Wood....however, even though he isn't bad. He is merely serviceable and while he may be a strong dancer and have charisma during the AMERICA number....it just is not an Oscar worthy performance. Rita Moreno was the only worthy castmember and she barely deserved her Oscar! Also, Don Ameche, as sweet and strong of an actor and person he was, really didn't deserve to win for "Cocoon". It was definitely a pure veteran win, but I do feel from that movie that they could have at least nominated Hume Cronyn for a veteran nomination as he had that great scene with Jessica Tandy near the end of the movie. |

BRAVO!! BRAVO!! ![]() Chakiris is the worst winner of an acting Oscar in the history of Academy, pretty lame!! Between the names in the list, the only one who I put in #1 was Bale, a very deserved win to me. Alan Arkin was not my favorite in that year, (Earle Haley and Murphy were better, imo) and Carrell was a better supporting from Little Miss Sunshine, but he won for a carreer award against a not so strong competition, so I'm ok. While I really liked Cuba Gooding, Jr. in Jerry Maguire, both Norton and H. Macy were way better, and are better actors, too. Clooney winning something for Syriana is just laughable, he certainly was in a very weak category and it was his consolation prize to the other losses, but Gyllenhaal was OUTSTANDING! Lee Jones should have won for 'JFK'. In this way, Ralph Fiennes could have won for his memorable role in Schindler's List, as DiCaprio that was marvelous in Gilbert Grape. The Tim Robbins' victory is also really lame, I mean, Bacon from the same movie was better, and Del Toro KILLED in 21 Grams. Caine is a great actor, but his win for Cider House Rules was a mistake. Osment and, primarily, Cruise should have won that award, the scene between Cruise's character and his father was incredibly touching. |

It does seem kind of surprising that Michael Caine won his second Oscar beating out Jude Law, Michael Clarke Duncan, and Haley Joel Osment in their career-defining roles, and the Golden Globe winner that year, Tom Cruise. It does seem strange that all five of these actors have a combined total of 0 Oscars, while Caine has 2. And it doesn't look like that number is going to change any time soon. However, my vote goes to Tommy Lee Jones winning an Oscar for action flick The Fugitive, over what I would consider to be one of the best performances ever captured on film: Ralph Fiennes in Schindler's List. Jones' win, to me, just doesn't make any sense when you put that into perspective. And I do think that what makes Jones' win more stinging is that he didn't even deliver the 2nd best supporting male performance that year (I would also give that honor to DiCaprio). I do think it's a shame that actors aren't getting Oscars when they should be getting Oscars. Giving Jack Palance an Oscar for City Slickers prevented Tommy Lee Jones from getting one for JFK. Giving Tommy Lee Jones an Oscar for The Fugitive prevented Ralph Fiennes from getting one at all. This is what makes Caine's win for The Cider House Rules all the more perplexing. Were Oscar voters somehow convinced that he hadn't won before? |

A choice between Cuba Gooding Jr and Christian Bale? Who can decide between those two shameless hams which was the less subtle performance? As for George Chakiris, that Oscar should have gone to Montgomery Clift. But George had great hair and very sexy dance moves, so let's give credit where credit is due. |
