I took out the obvious ones like Bullock, Paltrow, and Swank (who are always brought up that its tiring.) Which actress should give back their award for lead actress? |

Joan Fontaine, Mary Pickford and Loretta Young should be on this list. From those on your list i voted Matlin, but she was very good. Christie, Hunt, Witherspoon, Cher and Kelly gave very good and even great performances (Hunt and Christie especially). |

I ended up voting for Grace Kelly based more on the fact that her work is decent and that compared to Judy Garland in A STAR IS BORN, she was a mouse standing next to a lion. However, I was thisclose to voting for Reese Witherspoon as I found her to be the most forgettable of the lineup and she beat out a very strong contender (Felicity Huffman) but she did have some nice moments....eh maybe I should have pondered this more and voted for Witherspoon, whose spark from movies like "Freeway", "Election", and "Legally Blonde" seemed to vanish. Kate Winslet should have one, if not, two Oscars on her mantle (Eternal Sunshine and S&S) but her win for "The Reader" wasn't terrible for me as she hadn't won one yet, but I do feel her work in "Revolutionary Road" is what should have been nominated and that she or Anne Hathaway should have won. Katharine Hepburn's two wins she can keep, although she would rank fourth in both of those respective categories for me. Cher, Helen Hunt, and Marlee Matlin are middling for me but I would never consider them as terrible wins. Julie Christie is probably the only one here that I felt truly deserved her win, though she also had competition that was just as worthy. |

MY VOTE: Reese Witherspoon (the "Singing Nag") should give her Oscar to anybody else (Felicity Huffman? Keira Knightley?). Historically, Grace Kelly should give her Oscar to Judy Garland. I'm glad Miss Kelly won an Oscar, but it should not have been at Judy Garland's expense. DARLING (and PETULIA) are two of Julie Christie's best movies. I don't begrudge her win but I am sad that it was at Julie Andrews' expense. Marlee Matlin was great. I don't begrudge her win but I am sad that it was at Sigourney Weaver's expense. MOONSTRUCK had the potential to be a big stinky turd, but it is actually OK. I don't begrudge Cher's win but that award should have gone to Glenn Close or even Meryl Streep. I don't dislike Helen Hunt's performance but that award should have gone to Helena Bonham Carter or Kate Winslet. |

Hmmm... Well, for me, there are a few notable omissions from the list... regardless of how often some of those women come up in these conversations, they come up for a reason. As to some of the women included on the list: Winslet isn't in my bottom 10, but she's a breath away from it. I am in the (very) small coterie that actually thought Hunt was the most deserving of her lineup. The Garland loss is among my top three grievances in this category, but the Kelly win isn't even in my bottom 20. Comparing Christie and Andrews (my choice in '65) is one of the most strking examples of an "apples vs. oranges" debate that the category has ever had to offer, but Christie brings tremendous charisma to a part that could easily be nothing but a showboating spectacle. These women are my bottom 10 Best Actress winners, with little tags explaining my lack of enthusiasm for that particular performance: NOT NECESSARILY BAD, BUT...

highly artificial, but there is something appropriately disconcerting going on
here. Katharine Hepburn, “Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner?”: Grounded and human, wrings everything there is to be gotten out of a well-worn archetype.
Reese
Witherspoon, “Walk the Line”: Pert and charming, but we’ve seen the
flimsy dramatic material to much better advantage a thousand times over. Ginger
Rogers, “Kitty Foyle”: Trying to be Serious doesn’t come so
easily, but while the performance is only adequate, it’s hardly cringe-worthy. Katharine
Hepburn,“Morning Glory”: Points for confidence, but the
stiffness needs a desperate thaw that comes far too late to buoy up the earlier
weaker moments. SHOULDN’T HAVE GOTTEN NEAR OSCAR...

Bullock, “The Blind Side”: No tricks, no gimmicks, nothing but
solid professionalism…the result being perfectly bland. Loretta
Young, “The Farmer’s Daughter”: A kittenish charm does nothing to
inflate the inherent smallness of the part, and never becomes something truly
exceptional. Norma
Shearer, “The Divorcee”: A victim of technology as much as
anything, but relentlessly stagebound in every department, and too much a
product of her time to merit more than a nod. Joan
Fontaine,“Suspicion”: Feels remarkably amateurish, as
though she were edging into a cold pool… a truly confounding question mark made
all the more disappointing by past glories. Mary
Pickford, “Coquette”: Showboating on her
starpower, with never a truly memorable moment among a collection of merely
adequate ones... and more than a few inadequate ones.

I voted Helen Hunt for what I consider a nothing performance, however I must say Reese Witherspoon REALLY should give her Oscar to Felicity Huffman.

Agreed, Halle was amazing in that film. And i think its a toss up between Hunt and Witherspoon who got my vote. Resse was so ordinary in Walk the Line it just amazes me that voters saw the performance as anything more then just satisfactory.  54-12,12-6,6... to N# 1 in all of North America :) |
