All gave outstanding, iconic performances worthy of all the praise. Who gave the best performance however of all of them?

For me its definitely a toss up between Streep, Taylor, and Theron, with Leigh trailing behind.

Marion Cotillard, while deserving her particular year, does not deserve to be on this list. She was wonderful, but at the end of the day - it's nothing to write home about. Also...Hilary Swank? Really?

Also, while Fletcher won in lead, her performance was really a supporting performance. Bit of an interesting fact: The role of Linnea Reese in Nashville was created for and by Louise Fletcher, who herself was the daughter of two deaf parents and knew sign language (and who had worked with Altman on Thieves Like Us, her true comeback role). The role was eventually played by Lily Tomlin. Tomlin concluded that things worked out in the end because she was offered the role of Nurse Ratched in One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest and turned it down, which enabled Fletcher to eventually get it, so in a sense they simply traded roles. Tomlin was Oscar nominated in supporting, while Fletcher was bumped to lead, where she prevailed over Carol Kane (Hester Street), Glenda Jackson (Hedda), Ann-Margret (Tommy) and the presumed front-runner Isabelle Adjani (The Story of Adele H).

Also, is this really a poll for Best Performance, or is it a poll for Best Lead Female Character that won the performer an Oscar? I'd say it's the latter...

I'd have as my 10:
     * Vivien Leigh (A Streetcar Named Desire)
     * Elizabeth Taylor (Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?)
     * Katherine Hepburn (The Lion in Winter)
     * Meryl Streep (Sophie's Choice)
     * Diane Keaton (Annie Hall)
     * Liza Minnelli (Cabaret)
     * Janet Gaynor (Sunrise)
     * Julie Andrews (Mary Poppins)
     * Jane Fonda (Klute)
     * Susan Sarandon (Dead Man Walking)

Missing from this poll is the outstanding performance by Jessica Tandy in Driving Miss Daisy (1989). From this poll... maybe Vivien Leigh in Gone With The Wind.

Streep's "Sophie" is for me, THE iconic perf. Incredible and unforgettable.
Leigh's Scarlett is straight from the novel.

She didnt win, but Carrie Snodgress in DoaMHW (lol) stands the test of time for me. Fabulous work Carrie. Wish you were still doing films.

The Sunne in Splendour; I prefer my Roses White
