Get Real!  Lauryn Hill and the Dixie Chicks are like the two best wins in this category.  People must be drunk as a skunk.  Evil Grin

Lionel Richie and Celine Dion's wins aren't the worst wins in this category.  Huge sales and popularity were key factors in their victories.  My picks would have been Prince and the Fugees or Waiting To Exhale Soundtrack those years.

The Dixie Chicks deserved to win AOTY, but I will say that John Mayer was just as deserving. IMO "Continuum" is a modern pop masterpiece. I wouldn't have minded a Red Hot Chili Peppers win either. I love "Future Sex/Love Sounds," but not as much as those other 3.

"Fearless" deserved to win that year. There was no superior album nominated and that's coming from a major Gaga/Beyonce fan.

The most glaring wins to me were:
"Two Against Nature" by Steely Dan over "Kid A" by Radiohead -"Kid A" is arguably the best album of the last decade
"River:The Joni Letters" by Herbie Hancock over "Back to Black" by Amy Winehouse -absolutely ridiculous. "Back to Black" is another masterpiece.
"Genius Loves Company" by Ray Charles & etc. over "The College Dropout" by Kanye West -it looks like Kanye might never win AOTY. He should have at least won for his brilliant debut. "American Idiot" would have also been very deserving.
"Raising Sand" by Robert Plant & Alison Krauss over "In Rainbows" by Radiohead  -"Raising Sand" is a nice album, but it pales in comparison to Radiohead's masterpiece and even "Viva la Vida or Death and All His Friends" by Coldplay

I wonder how Adele's win (one of the best this category has ever seen) will be viewed fifteen years from now. I think she's comparable to Lionel Richie and Celine Dion. People will probably consider her boring and safe in the future. Some already do.

Adele's album is the only album from that lineup that I can still see critics and fans talking about fifteen years down the line. Offerings from Bruno, Rihanna, Foo Fighters and Gaga are practically already forgotten and weren't even praised as much as 21. Plus, Adele didn't have to face off against heavyweights like Prince, Tina Turner, The Fugees and Beck. She had to go up against Bruno Mars and Rihanna. She was the obvious choice. {#emotions_dlg.laugh}

So much hate for Taylor on here. Fearless winning Album of the Year is possibly one of the greatest wins. The album is a perfect breath of fresh air. Taylor takes you on a journey from the beginning to the end of the album. The tracks are flawlessly produced without the need of an expensive production team. Her lyrics are cleverly written and she gives us her perfect coming of age portrait through her music. And this is without mentioning the universal acclaim she got from music journalists and experts and also the record breaking sales. Taylor was up against nothing but trash that year as well. Fearless was 100% The Album of 2009!

To be honest though, I hate the stans more than I hate Taylor Swift's album. Thye just add that much to the negativity, unfortunately.

"Universal acclaim???"  Taylor Swift's Fearless only got a 73 on metacritic.  That would be considered generally favorable reviews.

The lineup in Swift's year was crap, every nominee could have been changed for a better album in their own field

BLACKsummers'night over I Am... Sasha Fierce

Funhouse over The E.N.D.

Yes over The Fame

21st Century Breakdown over Big Whiskey and the GrooGrux King

Fearless can keep his nomination, but Call Me Crazy would have been a better nominee.

I honestly think this could have been a much better lineup, imo.

Maxwell was so robbed of an AOTY nom in 2009.  However, Pink did not deserve an AOTY nom for an album that wasn't even her best work.

2009 is by far the worst set of AOTY nominees.

Yeah, Taylor Swift's "Fearless" was up against a pretty bad set of nominees (even though I love the BEP album). It's ridiculous that she won for that album and she didn't even get a nomination for the far superior "Speak Now".

I'm sorry but gotta disagree. Radiohead and especially Coldplay's albums were fantastic, but the collaboration of Plant/Krauss was just incredible. It was an "Event" album and deserved to be honored. I still listen to it all the time.

Yeah, The Dixie Chicks were one of the best AOTY wins they've bestowed in that category.

Agreed. Look, storywise, DCX returning with an album that wins AOTY is a pretty awesome headline...but it's not like it was undeserved. That album is absolutely incredible. Incredible lyrics, melodies and the production that smartly straddles the line between country and southern rock. Brilliant. It was an important, powerful album that also stands the test of time.
Very well deserved.

Oh, and please come back, DCX.

I honestly think that P!nk sustains the same level in her carreer from M!ssundaztood to Funhouse, still my favorite album is 'I'm Not Dead. But she would have been a better pop album in album of the year than The E.N.D., imo.

But yes, 2009 was the worst, ever.

Agreed, P!nk's Funhouse wasn't worthy of a nomination, her best work imo is Missundaztood. That album is kinda a classic for the 2000's an to me is really her artisic peak. She'll probably never be able to top it. And i would go so far as to say Maxwell should have win let alone been nominated.

I voted for Taylor Swift on this poll because, even when someone is to take away their bias against her, its still mind blogging how she won AOTY. She didn't have stronger lyrics or better production or even better vocals then her fellow nominee's and the album wasn't even critically acclaimed. All she had going for her was huge sales an being this cute young blonde girl who became wide eyed everytime she won an award. An really when you look at her competition their sales weren't shabby. I mean beyonce sold 3 mill, Lady Gaga and B.e.P both sold well over 4 million (In the States) so its not like she blew them away or anything. And if album sales is why she won then how come a nominee's single success did not come into play aswell. All those artists had way bigger hits off their respective albums. And each of those 3 albums possessed atleast one really strong element. Beyonce had amazing vocals, Lady Gaga and B.e.P both had amazing production. So in the case of who's AOTY award should be revoked i don't know why anyone wouldn't vote Taylor Swift.
