Guest-acting awards were initiated in 1986. They first started off without separating the genders. In 1989 the current system we recognize took effect. There used to be a sort of unofficial guest category called Outstanding Single Performance by an Actress in a Comedy or Drama Series. In 1975, Cloris Leachman and Zohra Lampert tied for this award. Prior to that, there was the Outstanding Single Performance by an Actor and Actress categories, which allowed guest stars to compete alongside performers from TV movies or specials. For example, in 1964, Jack Klugman won for his performance in an episode of The Defenders over Jason Robards in a TV production of the play Abe Lincoln in Illinois. Emmy category confusion seems to go way back! |
