(Reuters) - Actor Andy Griffith, whose portrayal of a small-town sheriff made "The Andy Griffith Show" one of American television's most enduring shows, has died at his North Carolina home, television station WITN reported on Tuesday.

The television station quoted a longtime friend as saying that the 86-year-old actor died at his home on Roanoke Island. The Dare County Sheriff's dispatcher would say only that an ambulance was called to Griffith's residence but would not comment further.

Griffith created another memorable character, the folksy defense lawyer in "Matlock" in the 1980s and '90s, but it was his portrayal of Sheriff Andy Taylor on the "The Andy Griffith Show" in the 1960s that gave him a place in U.S. television history.

The show portrayed life in the friendly, slow-moving fictional town of Mayberry, North Carolina, which was widely believed to have been based on Griffith's own hometown, Mount Airy, North Carolina.

One of my all-time favorite shows, so this is personally very sad for me.

He owned a piece of his show, "Gomer Pyle", and "Mayberry" (probably "Matlock" as well), so he was one of the wealthiest people ever to work in television.

That's terribly sad news. Andy Griffith is an institution here, so his passing is particularly sad. His legacy will be an immense one in both television and film. RIP.

One of the few authentic giants of that era of television, and a consistently underrated actor and entertainer apart from his contributions to television. He proved himself as a performer par excellence on stage ("Destry Rides Again," "No Time for Sergeants,") and film (his should-have-been-Oscar-nominated work in "A Face in the Crowd") and in his comedy and musical recordings. This is a deeply felt loss...

May Mr. Griffith rest in peace.

I was just this morning recommending this film to some friends, after having heard the sad news of his passing.  He was phenomenal in this!  And of course, The Andy Griffith Show is forever a classic.

For those interested, TCM is playing "A Face in the Crowd" early Friday morning (7/6, 1:45 a.m. ET). If you have DVRs, you might want to record this if you haven't seen it yet. It's part of their guest programmer night (Spike Lee) and a coincidence/unfortunate timing that this is playing when it is. TCM is doing a memorial tribute to Andy Griffith on Wednesday, July 18th, 2012, starting at 8 p.m. ET, showing "A Face in the Crowd," "No Time for Sergeants," "Hearts of the West," and "Onionhead."
