I still think Marcia Cross not getting nominated for Season two of Desperate Housewives is definitely a crime when she had several worthy submissions....she also had some great tapes for Season four as well.

And I will jump on THE WIRE train as well.

Mitchell did get a nomination for her performance as Juliet Burke, it was just in Guest.

Good point. It's a huge tossup for me to as of who is the bigger snub, Mitchell or Sevigny. But when I watch season three of Lost and see that incredible performance of Mitchell's in "One of Us" I'm reminded of what I huge snub this was. She got the Guest nod a few seasons later. It was nice but still didn't make up for her snub a few years earlier.

One of the worst is Beatrice Arthur and Rue McClanahan not getting nominated every season of the Golden Girls ( Betty white and Estelle Getty were though ). All 4 of them needed to be nominated every single season!!!!

Bob Newhart, THE BOB NEWHART SHOW
Andy Kaufman, TAXI
Dixie Carter, DESIGNING WOMEN

A special note about 4 actors from LAVERNE & SHIRLEY - Although the show was not the kind of cleverly written comedy series the emmys usually mentioned, the performances by Penny Marshall, Cindy Williams, Michael McKean & David L. Lander in the first several seasons of the show were perfect.

Lots of mentions for the ensemble of 24...yet it's interesting that when Cherry Jones won many weren't happy.

I agree with the Beatrice Arthur and Rue McClanahan mentions. Both of them were still strong in the remaining three seasons, not to mention both of them were amazing in "Sick and Tired" from Season 5, the first season they weren't nominated for. While the episode was clearly meant to showcase Bea Arthur (and she was wonderful, albeit more dramatic), Rue McClanahan practically steals it with what may be one of her best, if not THE best comedic episode of hers from the entire series (as her winning tape from Season 2 two also more dramatic and not purely comedic) where she tries to rent her romance novel and becomes sleep deprived and "sees little balls of sunshine in a bag!". I think on many levels that Beatrice Arthur and Rue McClanahan were more worthy to continue than nomination streak, but part of that may be that I have always had a slight annoyance for the character of Rose (though Betty White played her so well).

I totally agree about Elizabeth Mitchell. That scene she had with Michael Emerson ("You lied to me!") was stunning! Wasn't that the year Katherine Heigl ended up winning? Talk about a slap in the face!

I also agree about Vicki Lawrence as Thelma Harper! Mama's Family may not have been the best quality show but it has always been a guilty pleasure of mine and it was often hilarious. You could say she has an Emmy for playing Mama because she won for The Carol Burnett Show and I would hope that her submission had a "Family" sketch. Plus, I think it is amazing that she managed a nomination for the telefilm "Eunice" along with such strong dramatic veterans like Judy Davis, Claire Boom, Penny Fuller, and Rita Moreno for playing Mama.

On the tv show, she had a lot of fun episodes. Some of my favorites that I feel she could have submitted were when she is haunted by her mother's ghost...or the Jeopardy episode....or the one where they plan to tear down her house/neighborhood for a new city dump....she had many wonderful episodes.

I consider these all to be the biggest snubs in these categories because of the attention given to these shows and these performers on these shows at the time that they would have been nominated for them--

Comedy Lead Actress: Barbara Eden for I Dream of Jeannie

Drama Lead Actress: Melissa Gilbert for Little House on the Prairie

Comedy Supporting Actor: Gavin MacLeod for The Mary Tyler Moore Show

Drama Supporting Actor: Denzel Washington for St. Elsewhere

Comedy Supporting Actress: Marilu Henner for Taxi

Drama Supporting Actress: Amanda Donohoe for L.A. Law

Yeah, Billy Crystal was definitely worthy for Soap. In fact, most of that cast was strong. I think Robert Mandan (Chester Tate) was great on that show, too especially the first three seasons because he walked that fine line between being such a sleazy jerk but also very funny and strangely likable...in fact I loved Chester despite hating him at times....though by the final season I grew to hate him and his actions though that was more the fault of the writing.

Some of the 80s Primetime Soaps had strong performances that the Emmys primarily overlooked.

Knots Landing was the biggest affected by the shutout. Michele Lee and Julie Harris got nominated for the third season (deservingly) but both definitely deserved consideration in other seasons. As did Joan Van Ark and William Devane (esp. for the death of Laura storyline).

I know, I was a bit shocked by that as well. I was a fan of Jones' nomination and win. It may not have been everyone's favorite 24 season, but I thought Jones did a great job.

Seconded regarding Marcia Cross' season 2 work. To be honest though, I found the season 4 faking pregnancy storyline ridiculous.

A couple of others:
Kelly Bishop - Comedy Supporting Actress, Gilmore Girls
Reba McEntire - Comedy Lead ActressReba
Melissa Peterman - Comedy Supporting Actress, Reba

Even to this day when I check out the reruns "Reba" is so entertaining. Thanks in large part to both Reba and Melissa.
