The writers' branch is notorious for recognizing Emmy-unfriendly shows in the past. They recognized shows like The Wire, Battlestar Gallactica, Friday Night Lights, Scrubs, Louie, Episodes, etc. before other branches reached out to them. Which shows do you think may get that golden writing nomination this year? On the comedy side, I'm predicting Community's "Remedial Chaos Theory" for that fifth slot. I think the time has come for Community to receive at least one major nomination. On the drama side, I wouldn't be too shocked to see the pilot of Awake or an episode of Once Upon a Time or Revenge get in there, since all three were network TV's top new dramas of the year. Share your thoughts!

Just FYI regarding the first paragraph: Louie, Friday Night Lights and Episodes were nominated for the first time in writing the same year their lead actors got nods. FNL and Scrubs were nominated in directing and several casting nods before the writing branch caught up. Battlestar Gallactica too but I guess you mean top categories or at least main telecast categories, so I guess they fit. And The Wire only got two nods from the Emmys in their entire run and they were for writing, no other branches ever caught up. Back to your question...I think the obvious answer is Community. I really don't see them nominated anywhere else in the top categories. If Lena Dunham and the show don't make it, then Girls might also be a contender for this thread unless they get a Casting nod which new shows usually get. On the drama side, I don't see any other show being recognized for the first time here and not anywhere else, the only new show I expect to make any kind of impact is Homeland which will be nominated by other branches too. |

"Remedial Chaos Theory" seems the most likely. It's a show that has passionate fans, and it was a universally acclaimed episode, just like the other left field nominees in this category in years before, like "Poker/Divorce" and "My Screw Up". Plus, this category like a high concept episode, and this seems to be the only one this year with a chance of nomination. |

I think "Girls" is the likeliest contender. I'd be surprised if Lena Dunham didn't show up for writing (and maybe directing), but I'd be a little surprised if she showed up anywhere else. "Community" is possible, but I'm not holding my breath. "New Girl" might make an appearance in writing. Slim chance for "Happy Endings." Other than those, I don't think there's a likely contender. Any other show likely to be up for writing this year I think will be embraced elsewhere too. For an outsider show to get in, it usually requires a big, buzzed-about episode ("Hush" for "Buffy," "Middle Ground" for "The Wire"). I'm not sure there's such an episode this year.  |
