I was just curious to see how many we could list. By streaks I mean a string of consecutive movies by one director that were well/very well received critically. Oscar nominations are not necessary, but they can help you in your quest to find these streaks. I think we could consider 3 or more movies a streak, don't you agree?

Here are some examples:

Martin Scorsese: 2002-present: Gangs of New York, The Aviator, The Departed, Shutter Island, Hugo
David Lean: 1955-1970: Summertime, The Bridge on the River Kwai, Lawrence of Arabia, Doctor Zhivago, Ryan's Daughter
Francis Ford Copolla: 1972-1979: The Godfather, The Godfather. Part II, The Conversation, Apocalypse Now


Any others you can come up with?

If this is regarding Oscars, then Stephen Daldry.

If not, then Ryan's Daughter shouldn't be on Lean's list. Wasn't that movie very badly recieved and made him not want to direct anything else until A Passage to India fourteen year's later? Maybe it was something else, but I think this is what I have read.

It's not about oscars, it's more about critical acclaim. Ryan's Daughter was badly received but has since been "re-evaluated" by the critics, much like Psycho, in a way.

But no it's not about oscars.

Does anyone have a link that would show how early reviews were for Kubrick's films? I imagine they were very divisive for long points (I love a few of his movies, but I think he would have been the first one to say that Spartacus was less of his film than almost any other and in all, it was probably more of Kirk Douglas' movie than Kubrick's anyway).


Eyes Wide Shut is a strange case (I see that it has a 68 on metacritic), but there are many passionate detractors (including David Denby and Richard Corliss).
