Watching the Olympics, seeing the umpteenth tiresome ad for NBC's "Go On," I had a moment where I thought to myself that playing variations of his usual persona isn't helping Matthew Perry's career much. I would love to see him in a career-revitalizing "Boss"-style against-type performance. He's succeeded in dramatic roles before ("West Wing," "Good Wife"). I think he needs to do it again on a regular basis. What other stuck-in-a-rut actors would you like to see go in a completely different direction?  |

I immediately go to the TV moms...Jane Kaczmarek, Patricia Heaton, Patricia Richardson...Now Julie Bowen. Katey Sagal was once a TV sitcom mom - twice: Married with Children and 8 Simple Rules - but now look at her on Sons of Anarchy. She herself said if her husband hadn't created the series, she would have never been considered for such a role. |

I need that the Tina Fey, Maya Rudolph, Amy Poehler, and Kristen Wiig in a very dramatic role, especially Rudolph and Poehler, they can handle it. Michael C. Hall in a comedy series is something I could die for. |

Wiig can do drama just look at her in Friends with Kids. Also she could prove herself later this year. Hall had some funny things on SFU, but there were funnier actors on that show. Rudolph, Poehler and Fey need a Precious to show how dramatic they can be. |

Go rent Friends with Kids. Daniel's probably referring to television-work but you get to see Wiig opposite Jon Hamm in one of the best most underrated films of the year. Of course they were flings in Bridesmaids but their characters in this are completely opposite from what they did in that (think Leo/Kate in Titanic then Leo/Kate in Revolutionary Road...though not as front-and-center). One of the many highlights I took away from that film was "Wow, Wiig can play drama pretty well." |

I know Jon Hamm has shown up in many comedies lately but I'd like to see him leading a comedy series, I think he has a knack for it. Steve Carell could do some damage in a dramatic role, as could Jennifer Aniston. They've both taken dramatic roles in movies so I know they can do it, they've just shyed away from really stretching their acting talent. I could see them in meaty roles on HBO. One I've been dying to see is Tina Fey in a dramatic role; I can't recall her ever taking one? And not a playing-it-safe variation of herself (over-worked I-don't-know-how-she-does-it! type) but just a total transformation. It could be incredible or it could fail miserably, I just wanna see her stretch outside comedy. Finally, Allison freaking Janney needs a good comedic role! She's had her fair share of comedic performances in movies but I thought Mr. Sunshine could be her big break into comedy and the show ended up being a dud despite a great performance from her. She's always hilarious on talk shows, especially Ellen. She needs her own sitcom like NOW.

Check out "Away We Go," directed by Sam Mendes. It's a problematic film, but in it Maya Rudolph gives a performance that makes me think she could have an Oscar in her future. |

If I ever doubted Jennifer Aniston's talents, watching the film "The Good Girl" washed those worries away. She has such a great, understated performance; I wish she would take more chances like that. Ty Burrell has been in a surprisingly large amount of dramatic work, which is very hard to imagine after seeing him as a show-stealing comic character like Phil Dunphy. Joanne Froggatt is the sort of actress who, with a breakthrough like Downton Abbey, could crossover into a lot of American projects. I can see her being very funny is a Jason Reitman-type comedy. Giancarlo Esposito has impeccable timing, which could play well in a single-camera comedy series.

I've watched Away We Go and completely forgot that Rudolph was that power, I think I put her in my top 10 of 2009. |

What a great topic... Salma Hayek has done a lot of TV in recent years from Ugly Betty to 30 Rock and I'd love to see her as a lead or supporting role in a drama series. I could picture her playing one hell of a bitch on SVU type show. I think at this point I'd like to see Lisa Kudrow reinvent herself beyond the daffy, slightly bitchy characters she usually plays and try something totally different. I'm sure she has the talent to do so, although right now I'm drawing a blank on what kind of role she should play. Molly Shannon has been playing the same basic character now for over a decade and clearly it hasn't given her a starring role yet. Although she constantly shows up in guest spots, she has yet to find a breakthrough role (in a series), I'd love to see her just play totally against type and try something less over the top. Let's see who else? I think it would be nice to see Rob Lowe play a character that wasn't so rooted in vanity. He's so clearly fond of himself it's difficult to take him seriously in really any role. I'd love to see him play a character who isn't so put together; you know really get into a dark role. Go see Oliver Stone's Savages, in theaters right now. The film is good, but Hayek is great. She's the MVP of the film and in the exact role you're wanting to see her in.
Go rent Year of the Dog, one of the best performances I've ever seen, given by Molly Shannon. I bolded "type show" and "in a series" because maybe you're familiar with the films I listed and are just referencing TV work for the actresses. If so, that's cool. If not, watch both of those films. You'll be very happy with their against-type performances. |

In fact, I've seen Year of the Dog, and though her perfromance was flawless the movie itself was a big mess. And I have no plans to see Savages, it looks dreadful, but I am aware of her performance and in fact it's what got me thinking about her potential TV role.
