Ok, DDL has the looks, that's for sure. But does he have (as Tom O'Neil says) Lincoln's "charisma"? Maybe. We will see in November.

Could this be Spielberg's comeback?

If Steven Spielberg can get an Oscar nomination for Anthony Hopkins playing John Quincy Adams, I can't imagine any possible way Daniel Day-Lewis won't get an Oscar nomination for playing Abraham Lincoln, especially when he is a spitting image of him.

While a nomination is without question, I don't think Day-Lewis will win, mostly because this will end up being his third Lead Actor win, which will beat the record that is nicely shared between Spencer Tracy, Fredric March, Gary Cooper, Marlon Brando, Dustin Hoffman, Tom Hanks, Jack Nicholson, and Sean Penn. Does the Academy really want to take that title away from these eight legendary actors just so that DDL can hold the record all to himself?  It's not impossible, but still, to hold that distinction of three wins would be a pretty high honour that could take another 85 years for someone else to reach.

Plus, while this may not be as an important a factor, despite many nominations for actors playing historic U.S. presidents, no actors have ever won an Oscar for their portrayal. For the record, the following actors have received Oscar nominations for playing leaders of the United States of America: Raymond Massey (as Lincoln, Abe Lincoln in Illinois, 1940), Alexander Knox (as Woodrow Wilson, Wilson, 1944), James Whitmore (as Harry S Truman, Give 'em Hell, Harry!, 1975), Anthony Hopkins (as Richard Nixon, Nixon, 1995; and again as John Quincy Adams, Amistad, 1997), and Frank Langella (as Richard Nixon, Frost/Nixon, 2008).

I'll bet you a Romney-esque $10,000 that LINCOLN takes the Oscar for best makeup.

I don't see why Day-Lewis shouldn't be able to win a third Oscar, if his performance deserves it. He's a good actor and what more Oscar-baity role is there than Abraham Lincoln?

In my opinion, DDL is more talented then the majority of those men you listed. He is just as legendary when it comes to his performances. He should already have his third Oscar if you ask me. I'm not 100% sure if he will win but... Having a legendary name doesn't mean anything. Hilary Swank name is not legendary but she won 2 oscars comparing to many actresses who have 1 or none. We will have to see.

The best actor race will likely be just like the Best Actress race this year: 2-time winner and legendary actor in a less-loved film (I don't think Lincoln will be as huge of an Oscar contender as we think, unless Spielberg really works wonders) vs. younger actor who has yet to win in a more well-respected film (I'm talking Phoenix in The Master).

Wow. Awesome transformation. I really think Lincoln on its way to a BP nod. If Spielberg can get War Horse a BP nod, it will be an easier feat for Lincoln to do the same. Oscar loves em movies about historical figures, and they won't resist this one. And DDL versus Phoenix is turning out to be the race of the year.

After all those years he spent researching the role and the man, it was surprising. He may have felt the project was taking a very long time, and he does have several films scheduled for release. He's also working with Paul Haggis, which might be interesting. Personally, I dont think Neeson is 'too old' to have played Lincoln. Going with DDL seems like a brilliant choice regardless.

The film and the perf looks like sure-fire Oscar fare; but who can say. Some of these Oscar no-brainers havent always lived up to expectations.
I wouldnt bet against it though, at this very early point.
