With plenty of new musical adaptations I was wondering what popular musicals should have the chance to be made into successful movie-musicals. What are your thoughts. And help me with some new choices.

Gypsy, one of my faves Guys and Dolls Fiddler on the Roof (love this one) Ragtime (!!) The Sound of Music (well why not? Too iconic?) Sweet Charity Man of La Mancha Camelot Finians Rainbow Candide Mame Jesus Christ Super Star And many many others.... Or, what about creating a NEW musical for us all?

The Book of Mormon. A well-done screen adaptation could easily win Best Picture, not to mention the EGOT for Parker/Stone.

That's the one. I would love to see 'Bombshell' on stage or filmed and I loathed Smash. What they were creating was excellent though. |

Trey Parker et al's South Park eppy on Mormonism is one of the funniest ones I've seen. So hilarious imo. But, I tend to back away from any film which mocks religion(s), even if I am all for them. On the other hand, adapting Book of Mormon for the big screen might be worth it, not only for the potential quality of it, but for the backlash and outrage it may cause. Mormon power is enormous. I hope they're having really good luck with that central record they have of every man, woman and child on the planet......although, they're far from the only ones compiling this Big Brother tome... My preference would be none. Almost always, they don't work, are bloated, plodding adaptations. The movie musical was one of the greatest genres when originals. When adaptation stating taking over (starting around the time of Oklahoma/1955, then continuing with South Pacific, West Side Story, The Sound of Music and so on, though some of these reached mediocrity, they destroyed the original musical, pretty much forever.

Wicked and Into the Woods are happening, with Stephan Daldry and Rob Marshall already set do direct. There's also rumours of "Spring Awakening", but if that happens, please, whoever does it, please keep the original format, with the hand microphones and all, please!! I also heard rumours of a "Miss Saigon", but I think that depend on how Les Mis does, since it's another "Schonber-Boubil-Mackintosh production. And Lee Daniels said he'd like do direct the musical, sometime in the future. Also, a few years ago there were rumours of an "Aida" adaptation, starring Beyoncé and Christina Aguilera. I think it was just a rumour, but how would you feel about that? And talking about Beyoncé, even though it's not a Broadway musical, I think she's definetley starring in the Clint Eastwood's remake of "A Star is Born". There's also the "My Fair Lady" remake. I don't know that's going, but last time I checked, Carey Mulligan were so star in it, with a screenplay by Emma Thompson. I also heard about a "Jesus Christ Superstar" remake, with Marc Webb set do direct it. As far as my wishes, I wouldn't mind seeing adaptations of "The Boy from Oz" "Jekyll & Hyde", "La Cage aux Folles" and "Ragtime", as well as remakes of "Porgy and Bess", "Anything Goes" and "Fiddler on the Roof". When it comes to "Sunset Boulevard", I'll accept an adaptadion only, and I mean ONLY, if Glenn Close is cast as Norma, the role she originated! It's one the finest acting jobs I've ever seen! And since we're talking about Andrew Lloyd Webber, how come "Cats" never made to the big screen? Even though it's not my cup of tea, it's the second longest-running musical, it opened 30 years ago, it has one of the most popoular and recognizable songs in history of musicals and it's a Lloyd Webber musical, who already has three other film adaptadions (JCS, Evita and TPOT). Maybe it's because it's a musical with people dressed as... well, cats! But even so... |

Are we the same person?! I've dreamed of movie versions of Caroline or Change and Light in the Piazza. Caroline or Change would be very tricky, and they'd have to cut a lot of the music (since it's pretty much an opera) to make it more accessible...but as long as they kept "I Hate the Bus" and "Lot's Wife" that'd be thrilling to watch on screen I don't even like Wicked that much, but a movie version seems like the next logistical step. It's weird how it hasn't happened yet. If the movie got good reviews, it would become the highest grossing movie musical ever. I'd also like a proper, faithful (watchable) version of A Chorus Line. And Pippin would be kinda awesome. And Thoroughly Modern Millie with Sutton (or maybe Lea Michele if SUtton Foster's considered too old) would also be cool. Pot Pot Pot Ledom |

Into the Woods most definitely. I don't think Rob Marshall is well suited at all for the job. It's a very dark play, I think Tim Burton should be the one to direct it. |
