Only until this year has the Emmys treated a British series as a proper series, giving Downton Abbey a bucket of nominations. Previously, these shows have to submit in Miniseries (yet Ricky Gervais has still won for Extras in Comedy Series as Lead Actor) This leads me to this question - what if the Emmys weren't so biased towards British TV? If they were treated equally, which shows would have been nominated in series? It can be dating back to the early days of British TV even Here are some examples of my own: Fawlty Towers (1975 & 1979) In these 12 episodes, John Cleese and Connie Booth created something hilariously funny that is one of the best British TV series of all time. My predictions: 1975: It would have taken the space of Welcome Back Kotter in Comedy Series, without a win. John Cleese would have taken Hal Linden's spot in Comedy Actor. Andrew Sachs would have taken Abe Vigoda's spot in Comedy Supporting Actor, and possibly taken a win with the episode "Gourmet Night" 1979: It would have taken Mork and Mindy's Spot in Comedy Series, with a possible win (if it submitted The Germans, it would have scored a win for sure). John Cleese would have taken Robin Williams' spot for Comedy Actor, and won with "The Germans". Prunella Scales and Connie Booth might have slipped in to Comedy Supporting Actress (either one, not both) Keeping Up Appearances (1990 - 1995) One of the funniest shows of all time. It was the epitome of British humour and was incredibly intelligent My predictions: I predict Patricia Routledge would have been nominated for all five seasons, taking the spots of Delta Burke (1991), Marion Ross (1992, 1993), Annie Potts (1994) and Ellen DeGeneres (1995). I don't think she would have won. The series would probably not have been nominated for Comedy Series, but it is possible that it could have been in one or two years.  |

I think he's asking what British series would have fared well at the Emmys if they had been allowed to compete as legitimate drama or comedy series rather than miniseries/movies. Rumpole of the Bailey, which aired on PBS, was nominated as a limited series in 1981 and drama series in 1988 but I think category confusion caused it to miss out in other categories. Cracker was one of the most critically acclaimed British series of the 1990s (winning star Robbie Coltrane three BAFTA Awards for Best Actor) but was either ignored by the Emmys or not submitted/ineligible for consideration. It was honored by the CableACE Awards, however. On the comedy side, Yes Minister and Yes, Prime Minister would have done pretty well, but they would have been up against sitcom giants like The Golden Girls and Cheers, so maybe not. |

BRITISH PRODUCTIONS TO WIN EMMYS: Outstanding Miniseries: -Upstairs, Downstairs; The Jewel in the Crown; Prime Suspect 2; Prime Suspect 3; Prime Suspect 5; Hornblower: The Even Chance; The Lost Prince; Elizabeth I; Little Dorrit, Downton Abbey Outstanding TV Movie: -The Gathering Storm; The Girl in the Cafe Outstanding Drama Series: -Elizabeth R; Upstairs, Downstairs I'd say, since the Emmys represent the best in television broadcast in America, that this is enough Emmys for our friends across the pond.
