Watching this year's Drama Lead Actress race submissions, I discovered it's really a two-horse race. And Margulies is not in that mix (although I'm so thrilled she won last year because it's a great role, especially for a network). Instead, it's Kathy Bates and Claire Danes. They would both make deserving winners and it would be a shame if any of the other four won. Two years ago I foolishly went with Julianna Margulies over Kyra Sedgwick. Margulies had everything: The return to television, the freshman hit nominated for Drama Series, the Globe, the SAG, the TV Critics Awards, the previous Emmy win for another series (Supporting, ER), but...She botched her submission. Plain and simple. Then there was Kyra Sedgwick, who was entering the race at 0/5 and seemed to be the next casualty of the Primetime Emmys of being perennially nominated but not winning. But she nailed her submission. Absolutely blew away the competition, even the buzzed about Margulies. Now, sometimes buzz prevails over submissions. Just look last year with Melissa McCarthy winning over Martha Plimpton (best submission), Laura Linney (Emmy queen on a freshman Showtime dramedy), and Amy Poehler (overdue factor + show nominated for Series). What this thread is focusing on is the opposite. This thread isn't intended to make you ask, "Shouldn't this be in the Lead Actress thread," but to rather ponder when this has happened before. Because I screwed up last year and placed Margulies over Sedgwick. I'm not doing that this year. Margulies would have made a deserving winner two years ago and Danes would make a deserving winner this year; but each have the second best submission. Examples I think of: 2010 - Drama Lead Actress: Kyra Sedgwich/The Closer over Julianna Margulies/The Good Wife 2009 - Comedy Supporting Actress: Kristin Chenoweth/Pushing Daiseis over all of them {Krakowski, Perkins, Poehler, Wiig, Williams} 2008 - Drama Supporting Actor: Zeljko Ivanek/Damages over Ted Danson/Damages. - Drama Guest Actor: Glynn Turman/In Treatment over Robin Williams/Law & Order: SVU. 2007 - Comedy Supporting Actress: Jaime Pressly/My Name is Earl over Vanessa Williams/Ugly Betty. 2005 - Drama Lead Actress: Patricia Arquette/Medium over Glenn Close/The Shield. 2004 - Comedy Supporting Actress: Cynthia Nixon/Sex and the City over a repeat-win of Doris Roberts/Everybody Loves Raymond. 2002 - Drama Series: The West Wing over Six Feet Under - This breaks my heart. But The West Wing season four submitted their best while the freshman season of Six Feet Under - my all-time favorite drama series, mind you - did not. Further proof that voters sometimes watch the submissions and ignore the buzz. - Drama Lead Actor: Michael Chiklis/The Shield over the others {Hall, Krause, Sheen, Sutherland} 2001 - Comedy Supporting Actor: Peter MacNicol/Ally McBeal over Robert Downey Jr./Ally McBeal. 2000 - Drama Lead Actress: Sela Ward/Once and Again over Edie Falco/The Sopranos. ----- 2012: - Drama Lead Actress: Kathy Bates/Harry's Law over Claire Danes/Homeland - I don't mind being wrong; but being bold and ballsy outweighs being wrong. Mark my words. I think this is going to be the upset of the night. Unless Jessica Lange loses. |

So you are calling it with Kathy Bates? What a difference a couple of wks. make and actually watching the submissions. Like I have mention in some of my analysis, the frontrunners have underwhelmed for me (to name names, Julie Bowen, Ty Burell, Claire Danes, Giancarlo Esposito, Christina Hendricks, and Aaron Paul). And that is not to say that they won't win. They could still easily take their respective categories in walks, but I am thinking as a voter I wouldn't put them in my number one spot. That is why I have added the preference/rakings to my write ups this time around. |

In my opinion... - Bowen and Paul don't have the best submissions. Not even the second best submissions. - Esposito has the best submission. - Danes has the second best submission. - Burrell and Hendricks are up for debate; they have great submissions, but I don't know if 'I' feel they're the best. If going by the best, I'm leaning towards Ferguson and Baranski, though I'm not confident in them winning. |

2005 was a year when a ton of buzz-based favorites went down: Terry O'Quinn losing to William Shatner, Hugh Laurie (star of a hugely popular new show) and Ian McShane (Golden Globe winner) losing to James Spader, Sandra Oh losing to Blythe Danner, Glenn Close losing to Patricia Arquette. On the comedy side you had Everybody Loves Raymond beating Arrested Development and Desperate Housewives, Doris Roberts beating Jessica Walter. Though I don't know how strong the tapes that the winners in those categories had. |

2002: I would also add Lead Actress in a Drama Series–Alliso Janney won over Frances Conroy and Jennifer Garner. 1999: A lot of them this year. The Practice bested The Sopranos in Drama Series, Dennis Franz beat out James Gandolfini in Lead Actor and NYPD Blue won its fourth directing trophy. Finally, Helen Hunt over Sarah Jessica Parker and Calista Flockhart! You'd think Flockhart would have won in the year her show took home the Comedy Series Emmy, but it was not to be. Hunt always submitted well. 1998: Lead Actress in a Comedy Series–Helen Hunt over Calista Flockhart. 1996: Supporting Actor/Actress in a Drama Series–Murder One had the buzz, but Tyne Daly and Ray Walston won. 1995: Lead Actor in a Drama Series–Mandy Patinkin's submission for the first season of Chicago Hope (beat out more buzzed about ER and NYPD Blue leads). 1994: Picket Fences winning Drama Series over NYPD Blue. |

See, I put this in the thread of "The hardest part is getting the nomination." Honestly, I preferred Chandler's submission to Hamm's. But in no way did I ever expect Chandler to prevail. I figured Hamm had it or maybe Hall, out of sympathy for being snubbed the year before (the only yeat Bryan Cranston didn't submit the best yet still won; no way should Hall be Emmyless for season four of Dexter). Then again, it kind of does fit here because there was some major buzz of, "With Cranston gone and Hamm's submission, Mad Men finally wins an acting Emmy!" |

Jamie Pressly did not actually have a winning tape in 2007. She submitted Jump for Joy where in she wasn't given much to do and limited screen time. Granted it did not help that both Vanessa Williams and Elizabeth Perkins also botched their submissions. Jenna Fischer, and the Two and a Half Men have the better submissions that year, and I foolishly went with Fischer that year. |

Jamie Pressly won with a great tape. Of all the short performances we've seen win Emmys, I would call that one of the best ones. It was a lot of fun and it was worthy of a win (at least back then, I don't even remember the episode now, just that it was short and I knew she would/could get it). Cherry Jones could fit this. A decent tape with zero buzz. Although people could say she had neither. Jean Smart winning for Samantha Who also fits this. |

I was never that high on Season 4 of Dexter. It was right around then the show started to become a little full of itself and get way to ridiculous with its storytelling. Dexter going to the Thanksgiving dinner, the trinity killer was a silly plot in the end despite Lithgow's terrific performance, the other characters devolved back into one dimensional caricatures of themselves. Hall was always great but the show peaked in season 2 but I still enjoyed season 3 more than season 4. I think the season three win for Cranston had a lot to do with him receiving a ton of 2 and 3 votes while Laurie, Hamm, Chandler, Hall, and Fox's fans were a little more erratic. |

Garner submitted perfectly, she had the buzz and the best tape of that group, her loss is something that I don't understand. She, certainly, was better than Janney. |

I always felt that the buzz for Season 4 of Dexter was for Lithgow first and Hall second, which may have ended up hurting Hall's cause. Speaking of Dexter, another case where buzz lost out to tape- Jimmy Smits losing Guest Actor in 2009 to Michael J. Fox. |
