BBC America's first foray into scripted programming kicked off tonight. EPISODE 1.1: "Suviving Death" SYNOPSIS: "Kevin Corcoran, an Irish-immigrant cop in 1864 New York City, investigates crimes in the notorious Five Points area. In the opener, Corcoran searches for a child killer." # # # "I knew I shoulda taken that left turn at Albuquerque." |

BBC America certainly didn't skimp on the budget for "Copper," which comes with quite a pedigree. Created by Tom Fontana and Will Rokos (Oscar nominee for writing "Monster's Ball"), executive produced by Barry Levinson. Tom Weston-Jones as Corcoran and Franka Potente as a hooker with a heart of gold were solid, but the girl playing Annie (Kiara Glasco) was the MVP by far. Her presence reminded me of young Kirsten Dunst in "Interview with a Vampire." "I knew I shoulda taken that left turn at Albuquerque." |

Anybody watching? "Copper" is a solid Emmy contender in tech categories and with some of the actors. EPISODE 1.2: "Husbands and Fathers" SYNOPSIS: "A figure from Corcoran's past returns to Five Points, and new questions arise about his daughter's death and his wife's disappearance." # # # "I knew I shoulda taken that left turn at Albuquerque." |

Really? I don't see it getting very many nominations, but you never know–maybe it can manage a couple of Creative Arts nods. |

The sets are pretty impressive. BBC America didn't skimp on them. Costumes, hairstyling, makeup, art direction, all solid contenders, I'd say. Tom Weston-Jones is solid as Corcoran. It's only been two episodes but neither has been showy in the way Emmy voters like. As I said upthread though, Kiara Glasco as the child bride/prostitute is quite good and has a sense of presence that belies her age. "I knew I shoulda taken that left turn at Albuquerque." |

I'm trying... The premise is good, costumes, etc. But the acting and dialog are just not grabbing me. Had to turn it off halfway through the second episode. I know it's supposed to be good, but I found it a bit tedious, and I was soon losing interest. Maybe it's just me, but usually the shows I get addicted to, hook me right away.

I don't blame you about the second episode; the ending was brutally violent and tough to watch. I'm still intrigued, though. I always watch these historical dramas and think, "How the hell did ANYONE survive?" Seriously, the human race is lucky we made it into the 20th Century. Better late than never. EPISODE 1.3: "In the Hands of an Angry God" SYNOPSIS: "An Irishman is hung to death and a black pastor is suspected, but Corcoran doubts the man's guilt." # # # "I knew I shoulda taken that left turn at Albuquerque." |

"I don't blame you about the second episode; the ending was brutally violent and tough to watch. I'm still intrigued, though." Oh, no... that was one part I actually liked. I'm hardcore.... ;-) Maybe I'd be more intrigued if I were more of a history buff. "My fried chicken is to die for." |

Bump. The series has really hit its stride the last few episodes. Ratings are the highest in BBC America's history, higher even than "Doctor Who," but a renewal hasn't yet been announced. EPISODE 1.8: "Better Times Are Coming" SYNOPSIS: "Friendships are tested on Election Day when Maguire takes the law into his own hands, and Corcoran is forced to make a difficult decision." # # # "I knew I shoulda taken that left turn at Albuquerque." |
