In past years, repeat Emmy champs like Oprah Winfrey, Ellen DeGeneres, Candice Bergen and Bill Cosby pulled themselves or their programs out of the derby in order to share the glory with other contenders. Jon Stewart's "The Daily Show" has hogged Best Variety Series for the past nine years and is heavily favored by Gold Derby's Experts, Editors and Users to triumph again. Is it time for "The Daily Show" to step aside ... and let, perhaps, its spinoff show "The Colbert Report" or another worthy rival win? No, it's wins are typically deserved other than The Colbert Report could have won a few. |

The Daily Show is a shell of its former self and has not deserved many of its trophies, but I am never a fan of people taking themselves out of contention because it cheapens wins. Also, the academy needs to recognize their overkill themselves instead of someone else doing it for them. |

Argh! what a question, I love TDS & TCR, TCR can be much funnier sometimes but that can be due to TDS having to cover more sombre topics & politics then Colbert. TDS totally deserves all the awards it gets, I do feel for Stephen & his team every year though, especially as to me TCR is more of a variety show, TCR gets it's fair share of recognition too, maybe from different bodies, also; I don't think TCR would want the win if it was 'easy' I really can't answer that... pick something easier ;)

I would have let Conan win for his final season of The Tonight Show. And Colbert could have won a few times. But I'm not upset that The Daily Show continues to win. SNL is awful, Bill Maher is insufferable, Craig Furgeson has fans but the gags are repeated to death and the show gets very monotonous but he's a very good interviewer in terms of entertainment quality, Fallon is a terrible interviewer in my opinion, despite the rest of the show being very good, Kimmel isn't funny to me, and Conan has turned into a cartoon. |

To say it's been "hogging" Best Variety Series isn't really fair, is it?
Votes got them their wins... it's not like the show grabbed the awards
out of anyone else's hands. But now that I got that out of my system, it
does seem that some people really do have a problem with multiple wins,
even when they're deserved. As long as TDS continues to produce the best
variety show on television, it doesn't bother me in the least that they
keep winning. Good for them, I say. As for taking themselves out of
competition, that can also send the wrong message... like they are that sure they'd win again. It comes off as too presumptuous. You also invite comments like, "Well, they only won because TDS withdrew." That's not good. "My fried chicken is to die for." |

I'm of two minds on situations like this one. On the one hand, it's not TDS's fault the Emmys keep voting for them. They enter the race and enough voters pick them over the other contenders, period. It's not on them to force Emmy voters to consider another show. On the other hand, it's a classy thing to say, "We've been richly rewarded by our peers, thank you," and bow out of the race. They could also decide not submit in the Variety Series category but still enter in the writing, directing and other tech categories. If you win 9-10 years in a row, you've left your mark. I watch every single episode of The Daily Show and watch The Colbert Report episodes fairly regularly. I think they are both great shows, consistently of high quality. But sometimes Stewart just pulls things out of thin air that are just absolutely amazing television: This year there were several of these (as usual): - Iran's Oscar Victory (just for you Golderbyites) http://www.thedailyshow.com/watch/thu-march-1-2012/iran-s-oscar-victory?xrs=share_fb - Commision Impossible http://www.thedailyshow.com/watch/thu-january-5-2012/commission--impossible?xrs=share_fb http://www.thedailyshow.com/watch/thu-january-5-2012/commission--impossible---consumer-financial-protection-bureau-chief-appointment?xrs=share_fb - Inside the Political Curtain with Jon Oliver http://www.thedailyshow.com/watch/mon-april-23-2012/inside-the-political-curtain-with-john-oliver---herman-cain?xrs=share_fb - The Borscht Whisperer/Words of Warcraft http://www.thedailyshow.com/watch/wed-march-28-2012/march-28--2012---pt--3?xrs=share_fb http://www.thedailyshow.com/watch/tue-march-6-2012/words-of-warcraft?xrs=share_fb - Reaction to Kony Video http://www.thedailyshow.com/watch/mon-march-12-2012/my-little-kony?xrs=share_fb - Obama's Immigration Reform http://www.thedailyshow.com/watch/tue-june-19-2012/democalypse-2012---pander-express-edition---obama-s-immigration-reform?xrs=share_fb And these are just a few of the greatest of the past 8 months. And yet I know that winning 9 straight emmys is a LOT. That's why maybe I wouldn't be as sad if TDS bowed after winning its 10th (that sounds like a nice round number). But I would always be sad... always. |

^ The Kony video alone is proof enough that he deserves every single Emmy he has. Jon Stewart is brilliant. Stay in the race.

I'm entirely biased because he's a Brit too but: I just love John Oliver, I think he's second funniest to Jon, you picked some great selections there, I too watch every episode of TDS & TCR, it's usually the highlight of my day, the Kony 'bit' was definitely a highlight for me too.

Thanks for the support! I also agree that John Oliver is the second funniest of the show followed by Samantha Bee. |

Yes, and it's time the Emmys recognized Craig Ferguson's achievements for a change. One show winning for so long almost devalues the category. New, fresh blood is needed, and it's time The Daily Show pull a Candice Bergen and let somebody else win. |

I pretty much agree with this. Really, the only time I was disappointed in a Stewart victory was 2010 against Conan, as I watched The Tonight Show often during its last few weeks under his tenure and I always felt very entertained. Seeing Colbert win for Writing only to lose series also bummed me out a few tmes. Other than that, there's little else justifying a Daily Show withdrawal, IMHO.
