Nominations are usually announced in early to mid-October. Who will get nominated this year? Here are some thoughts: Pop/Rock Female Artist Adele, Katy Perry and Rihanna seem strong contenders followed by Kelly Clarkson. Nicki Minaj and Carly Rae Jepsen are also possible. Pop/Rock Male Artist Justin Bieber is the frontrunner. Like many rappers before him, Drake had enough mainstream success this year to show up here. Who else is there? Gotye, Flo Rida, David Guetta or maybe Usher? Pop/Rock Band, Duo or Group I think the nominees will be One Direction, Maroon 5 and Fun. Maybe Coldplay can sneak in. Pop/Rock Album Sometimes the same album gets nominated two years in a row, so I wouldn't be surprised to see Adele's "21" (the biggest seller in the eligibility period) nominated again. Who else will make it? One Direction, Justin Bieber and Rihanna seem like good bets. Soul/R&B Female Artist "Love On Top" was a huge hit on the R&B chart, so Beyonce is in. This category is really weak this year. Not many ladies were successful. Can Mary J. Blige get nominated? Rihanna has been nominated and even won before, but this year her presence on the R&B charts hasn't been as strong. Will they nominate Whitney Houston like they did with Michael Jackson despite the lack of new material? Soul/R&B Male Artist Usher, Chris Brown, Frank Ocean and Trey Songz are vying for the three slots. Country Female Artist This is easy. Carrie Underwood, Miranda Lambert and Taylor Swift will be the nominees. Country Male Artist Blake Shelton's popularity has risen ("The Voice" has helped), so he's in. The other nominees will be a combination of Kenny Chesney, Eric Church, Keith Urban and Jason Aldean. Rap/Hip-Hop Artist Drake and Nicki Minaj are in. Kanye West and Jay-Z could be nominated as a duo. |

The Wanted only hit in U.S.A. was Glad You Came and their album flopped, so they will only be nominated for Pop/Rock Group if the show counts Fun. only as an Alternative Group. In Favorite Pop/Rock Album, Overexposed and Up All Night sold more than Talk That Talk, so RIhanna goes for R&B Album. And don't you guys think that 2012 AMAs can top this year's VMAs and BBMAs? I hope so, because those shows were awful. |

"Up All Night" will likely get nominated for Pop/Rock Album and win. I also wonder how the whole two years in the row thngs works. Does it work only for re-releases? If not, Adele will likely be nominated again.

They nominated the three best-selling albums, even if they're old, i.e. Michael Jackson's Ones was nominated in 2009. If the rule doesn't change 21 will receive its second nomination for Favorite Pop/Rock Album. |

Nicki Minaj had big hits on the pop charts this past year ("Turn Me On", "Starships"), so her placement is understandable. The biggest surprise: Adele was left out of Pop/Rock Female Artist despite huge album sales and a #1 on the Hot 100 ("Set Fire to the Rain"). Another major surprise: Blake Shelton wasn't nominated for Country Male Artist. I don't like that the pop/rock categories expanded to four nominees. |
