I think Dustin Hoffman qualifies in Lenny. He was inebriated during one of his stand ups, was he not? I'm sure Valerie Perrine was inebriated with him. She lost to Ellen Burstyn for Alice Doesnt Live Here Anymore. He lost to Art Carney for Harry and Tonto. ETA: Pat Morita has a "drunk" scene in The Karate Kid. He lost to Haing S Ngor for The Killing Fields. The Sunne in Splendour; I prefer my Roses White |

What about drugs in general? (not only alcohol) Meryl was nominated for playing a drug addicted actress in "Postcars from the Edge" (with a terrible snub for Shirley MacLaine) and has a hilarious "high on Orchid dust" scene in "Adaptation".

I don't recall her having a drinking scene but in Dreamgirls, Effie states "One night after you hire me, I'll tell you how I blew through half a million dollars in two years...drinking!" |

I watched HARVEY last night. Jimmy Stewart plays an amiable alcoholic, but he never seems drunk or out-of-control. It is one of those rare performances in which alcoholism is not treated as an illness or personality defect, per se. Stewart was nominated for an Oscar but lost to José Ferrer for Cyrano de Bergerac. TRIVIA TIDBITS OF THE DAY: Ferrer was married (twice) to Rosemary Clooney, which makes him George Clooney's uncle. Ferrer was also married to Phyllis Hill, and to Uta Hagen... |

^You are absolutely correct -- Eileen Heckart as "Mrs Daigle" is perhaps the greatest tragicomedic performance ever!!!
