I'm a fan of Nic Roeg's work, but honestly haven't seen Insignificance since before it came out in 1985. Based on your suggestion, I will watch my DVD in the next couple days and write about it.

babypook, you recommended it to me some time ago so of course I've checked it. It was quite fascinating to watch. Very intimate portrait of two icons. I know there were four of them but I was the most interested in Einstein and Marilyn. It's always nice to see a different side of your favourite actress on screen. I'd love to see Theresa Russell act again! Why isn't she working anymore? Oh, I know... the age.

Somehow, Michelle's performance reminds me of Moore's part in The Hours.  I know they are not quite the same as Monroe's a celebrity and Laura Brown was only an ordinary housewife.  Yet, their struggles share some similarity in terms of the conflict between their seemingly wonderful life and the internal dissatisfaction.  Both Michelle and Moore have done a great job portraying the conflict but I feel Moore's character is more conceptual so even if she skillfully visualize her desperation, it’s not as touching as what Michelle demonstrated in Monroe, whose pain appears to more real and understandable.

It's been a while since I've seen it, but it has stayed fresh in my mind. I think she's married to Joe Dimaggio at the time. although I think she made a reference to Arthur Miller..

Theresa Russell is working, and rather steadily. I was so happy to see her up on the big screen in Spiderman 3, and she is in Jolene with Jessica Chastain. They arent big roles, but so what. And, she has several upcoming projects.
I think my favorite perf by Theresa is in "Black Widow" with Debra Winger. I truly wish her well and hope she enjoys the success she deserves.
Glad you watched it Sasha!

The only other performance that I've seen this year that moved me close to the way Williams did is the one by Evan Rachel Wood in The Ides of March. She's supporting and she's at somewhat of a disadvantage by comparison to Michelle's part, but she moved me all the same.

You likely know this, but Russell was married to Roeg when she made those films.

I was incredibly disappointed in this film. I thought the script was lifeless and I didn't really enjoy the supporting cast at all.

Then there was Michelle.  I went in with very, very high expectations and left very, very disappointed. Yes, she captured the vulnerable and emotional side of Marilyn, but that part I wasn't worried about.  Not once did I look on screen and say "yes, she's confident! she's sexy! I completely understand why men are falling for her" If anything, I found her to have a lack confidence throughout the entire film.  Not to mention, the wide eyed look seemed very forced. Actually, a lot of the physicality of her character seemed very forced, calculated, and unnatural. Her movements were noticeable, not part of the character. In other words, I didn't at all buy the MARILYN part of Marilyn. Did I buy the girl underneath it all? Yes. But that wasn't enough to make me believe the transformation.

Hmmm these are just my initial thoughts since I just came back from the film, but I just am so disappointed.

Yes, I know this. Just as I know that you know that she was not much more than a kid and he was sixty.

Caught up with this one today. It's a charming little film, perfectly inoffensive, but unfortunately not much of an artistic achievement. There appeared to be not one single original idea in the entire screenplay, and I'm frankly somewhat surprised that such an impressive cast was rounded up for something that from the beginning aimed to be so middle-brow. Kenneth Branagh was a real delight, and I found myself smiling and chuckling along with every sly line reading or eyebrow raise; while I would not be overly upset if he was overlooked this awards season, some recognition for one of our most effortlessly talented actors would be a welcome treat. Dominic Cooper and Judi Dench are also welcome screen presences, and with each new role of his I find myself chomping at the bit for Cooper to get the meaty, A-list parts he deserves. Julia Ormond, in a bit part, is simply regal as Vivien Leigh. If anything comes from this film, I hope someone is inspired to give Ormond her own film centered on Leigh -- with just a few minutes onscreen she almost steals the entire show.

Williams is predictably excellent in the starring role. It doesn't approach the heights of Wendy and Lucy or Blue Valentine, but it's moving work nonetheless. There are flashes of pure brilliance throughout the film, and she nails Monroe's onscreen presence, especially near the film's beginning when Colin watches footage of Monroe before she arrives in England. I cannot imagine any other actress in Hollywood being able to pull this role off; Williams makes a lot of expected choices, but the execution is what sets her apar as perhaps the greatest of the current generation of rising actresses. I think Charlize Theron, for example, would have nailed the sexpot star aspects, but the vulnerability that Williams brings is a unique and valuable asset to the film. Just as there was only one Marilyn, I believe in time we will see that there was only one Williams.

Also of note: Eddie Redmayne is stunningly and unexpectedly gorgeous in this film. Williams looks good, too, but I was bowled over by how attractive Redmayne was onscreen. For the first time, I see him as a viable romantic lead, and can't wait for the inevitable period romance that is surely just around the corner. As for Emma Watson... I'm slightly shocked, but intrigued, that she took on such a tiny part for her first post-Potter venture. She, as in the former series of films, is still a bit too mannered for my taste. Whenever she tilts her head or squints her eyes, you notice it (and not in a good way), because it is not natural for her. You can see her thinking out her character and her next steps; when she can learn to feel a character, to just simply be the character, then we may have a formidable talent on our hands.

I also tried to picture Theron in this role. She would have been a better fit physically but not sure if she would have captured the child like quality.

I enjoyed the film and thought that Michelle Williams was positively luminous as Marilyn Monroe. If I had any doubts before that she's getting nominated for this performance, I don't have them anymore. Kenneth Branagh's role seemed like it was downplayed in the reviews, but his Olivier was more significant than I thought it would be. He shouldn't have too much trouble getting a nomination either. And even though Eddie Redmayne's role was kind of thankless here, he had an unmistakable charm and presence throughout that was hard to forget. His time is coming very soon. Very glad I watched this.

I saw this film yesterday. The movie, overall, was average, but Michelle's performance elevated it. Physically, she definitely didn't do the role any justice. But she none the less captured an array of Marilyn's traits, (what little I do know about her), very well. No mystery as to why she's in high contention to take the prize. I'll definitely need to see all of the performances nominated, but she definitely wouldn't get my vote for the win, thus far.

It would be a very tough call for me. I'd have to leave room for a Meryl vote, since I havent seen her yet, So far it would be between Davis and Michelle.
But if she's nominated, my vote would go to Rooney Mara.

Thank you. This very accurately sums up how I felt about her performance. As I said, I thought the film was crap and something about William's performance really bothered me and I think you hit the nail on the head when you said that she failed at capturing her physically.  Most of her movements seemed forced and looked out of character -- they didn't seem natural.  But, as I said before, I do recognize that she captured the heart of Monroe, though I had no doubt she would be able to do that.  Her physical behaviors really distracted me from everything else. Am I crazy for not understanding the buzz around this performance?  Maybe it's because I'm not that familiar with Monroe. Maybe it's because I was too distracted by the film. I don't know.

I, for one, have absolutely no problem with Williams focusing on performance and not nailing Marilyn physically (an IMPOSSIBILITY).

Well, when the people I saw this with complained that Williams didnt "look" like Marilyn at all, I pointed out to them that there was only one Marilyn, and that I felt she captured her essence to an achingly accurate degree, they nodded and said, "She should have gained ten pounds and her hair should have been whiter."

Lol! Doesnt appear that I convinced them of my point.
