Oh what a year this has been. I first would like to say 2012 gave us so many wonderful films, so congratulations to everybody on making this a vibrant and unique year! Below are my final predictions with (few) changes from my Video Predictions. I will give a commentary for each. I don't expect to do well this year, but I do expect to be happy that some of my predictions are wrong!
______________________
BEST PICTURE: Argo

It's come down to this. As much as I want Lincoln to prevail here, the guilds and people have spoken- passion seems to be in Ben Affleck's camp. Which is fine, I guess. It's a great movie and I think it's just too bad he couldn't have been up for Best Director. But we must remember that when it comes down to it, Best Picture and Best Director are two separate categories. Otherwise, why not merge them into one? My only other notion is that Silver Linings Playbook is a lot closer than we think to taking top honors. Don't be surprised if voters use it as an alternative if they feel they must validate a Best Picture win with a Best Director.

BEST DIRECTOR: Ang Lee, Life of Pi

I've officially switched to Lee. While Spielberg seems like the safe choice, there's no denying the one thing I get a feeling with this year- voters aren't going to give him Director and not award Lincoln Best Picture. And because it seems like there isn't as much love for the movie anymore, scratch off Spielberg. This isn't consolation prize time. Voters will choose who they feel most deserves it, and Lee does deserve props for bringing this story to a visionary journey. I don't think Haneke wins, but if he does- he too would be deserving as the film is truly about the vision of how the story is presented, and what scenes to show and what scenes to leave up to the audience to decide. A masterpiece in every regard. Zehtlin is the shock nominee, could he be the shocking winner? Not likely, but anything is possible this year. Which finally leaves us with Russell- who was able to get 4 of his actors in the boat, which means actors might go gaga over him. He has the Harvey factor too. It's the least deserving choice of the bunch, but DGA snub aside this could be the big ouch of the night. Spielberg will win when his film is poised to win again.

BEST ACTOR: Daniel Day-Lewis, Lincoln

He's the most deserving of all the four acting races this year; no one else is even close. All signs point to him. Please Meryl, say his name Sunday.

BEST ACTRESS: Emmanuelle Riva, Amour

In my video I say Lawrence- now I have to switch it to Riva. She is the best in show and she has the best story- 86 on Oscar evening and BAFTA just picked her. There's also Jessica Chastain lurking in the background for an upset. Most pundits still say Lawrence, and why not? If voters are going to honor the movie with an acting honor, she's the best place to go- she also has the best formula for a best actress winner and they love showy. Riva is also showy, though more in the physical sense. It's a true nailbiter. I'm going with my heart here, will voters do the same?

BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR: Tommy Lee Jones, Lincoln

Anyone's game. I don't buy for a minute that De Niro is going to win just because "he hasn't had a great role in 20 years". That's no reason to give him this honor. He's OK in the movie but nothing special. Arkin would be a worthier winner because every scene he has in Argo satisfies me. It's a true supporting performance. Hoffman is brilliant in an unliked movie outside the acting races, and Waltz suffers from having just won in 2009 for what some argue is a similar role (I disagree). I hope Waltz wins- every time he's been nominated, he's won. Jones has the SAG and is the heart of Lincoln but his grumpy attitude might turn some voters off. I say he squeaks in for a win.

SUPPORTING ACTRESS: Anne Hathaway, Les Miserables

She's steamrolled through awards season ala Jennifer Hudson style- supporting female with dominating song in musical that otherwise has gotten divided responses. Awkward speeches aside, it's her year to shine and her Catwoman role in The Dark Knight Rises earned her great ink as well. A done deal everybody. Love to see Sally steal it, but not in the cards this time.

ADAPTED SCREENPLAY: Argo, Chris Terrio

If Kushner wins, it will be the highlight of my evening. A month ago he was locked to take this. Now everything has changed because of the Spielberg backlash and voters feeling they have to compensate Argo winning best picture with another major award. Still, Terrio's script is fresh and witty, so it's still deserving. Watch out for Russell to swipe it for Silver Linings Playbook though, it happened at BAFTA- it could happen here.

ORIGINAL SCREENPLAY: Django Unchained, Quentin Tarantino

Many are still saying Haneke wins for Amour, which seems to be the safe bet. But I say voters go for the juicier script- controversy withstanding. Still no Writer's Guild nod means Mark Boal could still prevail for Zero Dark Thirty. But his recent win for The Hurt Locker (where he ironically defeated Tarantino as well) could be too soon, plus with similar themes. It's a tossup again. Precursors don't mean as much in the screenplay categories.

I'm going to be extremely mad if Jessica Chastain wins Sunday. I'm not buying into her buzz at all. She didn't really do anything special. If she wins, it'll be a Patricia Neal-like situation. I predicting Lawrence, but The Academy hates young actors and comedic roles, which Lawrence is and what her role was. They also love old people (Christopher Plummer, Geraldine Page, Peggy Ashcroft, etc.) Riva winning won't be surprising and I won't be disappointed. Now if Chastain wins, I'll be booing at the TV like a wrestling fan everytime John Cena wins another title!

Woww. A lot of people are pulling for Haneke. That'll be the biggest surprise of the night for sure if that happens. And Traffic should have won Best Picture in 2001.

Chastain is never out od the race, she's hurt by ZDT's controversy. I will be very surprised and delighted if she ends up winning, if the academy wants to give ZDT someting, that's the best bet.
