I just started watching the reels tonight. I've only gotten to Y&R's so far.
The Young and the Restless

Michael and Phyllis are driving off in a car racing to find someone. Jana and Lauren are walking. Jana wants Lauren to leave her behind. Lauren's doppleganger finds Jana and Lauren on a carousel... Theme Songs Daniel comes to Amber's door. Jack confronts Patty about being Emily. Jack lashes out at Patty. Emily tries to prove to Jack she is Emily. She defends why she has Patty's diary. Amber asks why Daniel fucked Daisy. Daniel tells Amber that he didn't sleep with Daisy intentionally. Michael and Phyllis are still driving. Sarah holds Jana and Lauren hostage at the carousel telling them that she will kill them both, as Daisy shows up at the carousel. Kevin shows up at the Carousel. Sarah shoots Kevin point blank, telling him "It's time to see daddy." (Fade to Black/Commercial Break) Katherine and Old Guy show up at abandoned theme park and hear gunshot. Phyllis tells Michael to "go get her, Michael, go" and Michael runs out of the car. Kevin wrestles the gun away from Sarah and knocks Sarah down. Kevin and Jana embrace. Lauren tells Kevin that Rider and Daisy are Sheila's children, and Sarah is Sheila's sister. "I didn't survive Sheila to have that bitch take me down."- Lauren Fenmore, as she tells Kevin and Jana to run Daisy pulls a gun on Kevin and Jana. Sarah or Lauren (they're both Tracey E. Bregman, so who cares?) runs out the carousel. (Mid-Show break/Bumper) Sarah or Lauren winds up in a hall of mirrors. Sarah is looking for Lauren in the hall of mirrors. Lauren finds Sarah in the hall. Lauren fires and hits a mirror. Michael comes into the Hall of Mirrors from the shattered glass. Rider stands in between the gun and Kevin and Jana. Kevin takes the gun and then pulls it on Rider. Jack and Emily continue to fight about Patty. Michael tells "Lauren" that everything will be okay now, not realizing that Lauren is really Sarah. Sarah thinks that she is going to kill herself. The real Lauren comes out of hiding and tells Michael that "Lauren" is Sarah and that Sarah wants to "kill us". Emily tells Jack that she's changed and if he doesn't believe her, she doesn't know what to do. Jack wants Emily to put him on the approved list of people to see Patty. Emily breaks down in tears. Rider tells Kevin that Sarah is the only family that he and Daisy ever had. Kevin tells Rider to run away and never come back, and if he (or Daisy) ever comes back, Kevin vows to kill Rider or Daisy. Phyllis finds Kevin and Jana. Lauren tells Michael about Sarah and her history. "You may have taken my face, but you will never take what me and Michael have had." Lauren tries to convince Michael that she is really Lauren. Michael is still confused, but convinces that Lauren is Lauren, because she remembered her wedding vows to Michael. Amber believes Daniel on the Daisy situation, but tells him that it doesn't matter. Amber tells Daniel that being a mom is important to her, but not to him. Daniel tells Amber that he will be there for her. Jack is talking to a kitty. "Emily" carves into a painting of Emily. "Emily" is really Patty. Katherine and old guy are in the chopper, with old guy flying the chopper. Jana seizes in Kevin's arms. END OF EPISODE Tomorrow's previews + Closing Credits END OF REEL
ANALYSIS: The sub-storylines killed the action of this scene. The Amber/Daniel scenes- come on? Really? The carousel scenes with Bregman and Bregman were exciting. The scenes with Lauren, Lauren, Michael, Kevin, and Jana at the abandoned amusement park were thrilling and at the edge of your seat.
Up next is OLTL, and then I'm going to bed and watching GH's reel before work tomorrow.

ANALYSIS: Pretty good. If this is what they submitted in Drama Series, they could win both. The action was there, much like in Y&R's reel. Lives were in the balance, like past Emmy-winning GH reels, like last year's GH reel, for example.

I watched these B&B episodes, or at least an edited down version of them, because this was also Susan Flannery's submission. From what I'd heard this was supposed to be great TV, but I thought it was quite bad. I'm not sure why it has made B&B such a huge frontrunner in its categories this year. |

B&B ANALYSIS: They got a Directing nod for this? The only saving grace was the final scene. They call B&B a front-runner because...
1) GH

My ranking of the episodes:
4) OLTL-You know you're watching a bad Emmy submission when the episode begins with a performance of "I Gotta Feeling." This getting a nomination speaks pretty poorly for the shows that didn't get nominated. The prom-theme and cheesy choreography were reminiscent of a bad Disney movie and the side story with Natalie was uneventful and distracting.
3) Y&R-This submission was captivating and visually interesting, especially the carousel and house of mirrors scenes. The filiming of the action sequences and action was suspenseful and for the most part all the scenes directly or indirectly were dealing with the same plot which helped connect everything together. To me the biggest problem is the writing just didn't keep pace. The direction was top notch, but I didn't finish the episode and think to myself, "Wow, that's good television" mostly because the writing didn't give the actors a lot to work with.
2) GH-This was certainly the most visually interesting episode. The special effects at the art gallery were top notch and the ending with Franco jumping off the building left a lasting impression. The problem I had with the episode was that I thought the acting was atrocious, which dimishes the work of the directors. Several scenes should have been high intense action sequences (i.e. Franco shooting at Jason in the stairwell). While bullets are firing at him, Jason's facial expressions are so bored and uneventful you'd be hard-pressed to believe his life was in danger. And much of the hospital scenes center on horrible acting from Kristina. And James Franco...there's just something a little weird and off-putting about his performance. I didn't really buy him as a dangerous character. On a technical level, the episode is outstanding. But overall for me the episode just didn't work.
1) B&B-Honestly in a lot of ways I didn't really care for these episodes. There's a level of cheesiness that gets to be a little grating. Luckily though the episode centers on the acting of Susan Flannery and Katherien Kelly Lang who manage to pull everything off to the benefit of the directors. The fact that the episode is mostly self-contained makes it easy to follow and the directing choices, from the excellent flashbacks to prior episodes, visuals of the scarf floating, the ending musical sequence etc. help make up for some downright laugable dialogue. To me the B&B submission stood out, was well-acted, and was such an interesting and unique set up for a soap opera storyline that if to choose from these submissions, I'd reluctantly say B&B was the best. |
