In the last five years the LA Critics have awarded: Best Actress to Hye-ja Kim (Mother), Yolande Moreau (Seraphine) & Marion Cotillard (La Vie en Rose) Best Supporting Actor to Niels Arestrup (A Prophet), Vlad Ivanov (4 Months, 3 Weeks...) & Luminita Gheorghiu (The Death of Mr Lazarescu) Director to Olivier Assayes (joint winner) (Carlos) As well as Best Picture to Letters from Iwo Jima in 2006. So what are the contenders this year? Not just for LA but the other major critics. |

I think you mean foreign language, not foreign film as your headline indicates - lots of foreign films (Melancholia, Shame, We Need to Talk About Kevin, Iron Lady, several others) might win awards from them. Letters from Iwo Jima was an American film. The best chance among the top three awards could be actress for the brilliant Yun Jeong-hi for the South Korean film Poetry, one of the most acclaimed films of the year overall. (BTW, the actress from Mother is KIM Hye-ja, not the ass-backwards wrong way IMBd insists on listing Korean, Chinese and other Asian names - I hate how they are confusing people with this). (Poetry is available streaming from Netflix by the way - it's the best film, even more than Melancholia, I've seen released in the US this year at this point).

Yes I meant foreign language films. Just edited the topic. Anyone else got any other contenders? |

I absolutely agree. Poetry is heartbreakingly amazing & a beautiful masterpiece. I'd have no problem at all if it won the BEST PICTURE OF THE YEAR) from the LA critics, or if Yun Jeong Hee won Best Actress. Kim Hye Ja, Niels Arestrup, Vlad Ivanov, Sergi Lopez, and especially YOLANDE MOREAU, were especially deserving of their acting awards from the LA critics. (Yolande acted circles around Sandra Bullock or Meryl Streep in 2010.) I still hope A SEPARATION (Iran) somehow finds its way into the minds of voters beyond the Best Foreign Language Film award. Acting-wise, Sarina Farhadi, in particular, deserves accolades as supporting actress. Yun Jeong Hee |

I think A Separation is going to be a big winner with the LA Critics before it goes on to win the Oscar. |

Yes, I feel it's Yun Jeong-hi who'll get Lead Actress this year. SHe seems to fit the bill in a category where the LA Critics love recognizing performances from foreign language films. |
