Is Safe and sound eligible for Oscar ????????? anyone know???????please tell me

We won't know for sure until the Music Branch makes the determination for all submitted late this year.

Where it is placed in the movie, and proof that it was written specifically for the film are usually major elements in having song accepted.

"Safe & Sound" was only a credits song, and then it wasn't even the first, which automatically disqualifies it, right? Shame, that song has really struck a chord with me.

Is that true? It only plays over the credits and it isn't the first song? If so that's a shame because it's a lovely song.

I believe a lot of people fall into the school of thought that says popularity and LCD (lowest common denominator) go hand in hand.  And more often than not, it's true (see the Transformers trilogy, any Adam Sandler movie, for example).  But it's not always the rule.  And the vibe I'm getting from certain posters on here that if a film is selling 12 tickets per second, like The Hunger Games is right this moment, then it's auto-dismissed as crap.

But I believe, after seeing the movie today, that we have our first 2012 Oscar-in-an-ideal-world contender, with everything on the table; Picture, Actor (was not prepared for how much I rooted for Josh Hutcherson's Peeta; he was a revelation here), Actress (Lawrence was spectacular), Supporting Actor (any one of Tucci, Harrelson, Kravitz or Sutherland), Supporting Actress (Banks), Director, Adapted Screenplay, Music, Sound, Song (even though both were in the end credits; Taylor Swift's Safe and Sound plus Arcade Fire's Abraham's Daughter) and pretty much every other tech category.

Now in the Oscar-in-the-real-world, it *might* get a tech nomination or two, but at the end of the day this will be overlooked as easily and without a nano-second thought as one stepping over a crack in the sidewalk.  I was hugely entertained today and didn't give two you-know-whats about the Battle Royale comparisons or anything else.  The movie did its job and more, and I can't wait until next November for Catching Fire.

Item: there was no Twilight Breaking Dawn 2 trailer attached to the IMAX version where I saw it at AMC Neshaminy Mall in Langhorne, PA, one of the first places in the Delaware Valley to have the earliest screenings this morn (9:30AM).  Perhaps that was just reserved for non-IMAX screens.

Hey Paul, does "Safe and Sound" play immediately with the credits? I really want for it to be an Original Song contender.

Tye, Abraham's Daughter played first in the closing credits, then segues into Safe & Sound, then a third song whose name I can't recall at the moment :|

Safe and sound deserves to be an awards contender. Well I am sure the Hollywood foreign press will surely put this song in for contention. Along with Critics Choice, but I see this hype for the song slowly fading away.

If "Safe and Sound" was played 2nd during the credits, than it's definitely inelgible. According to the rules, the song has to be played first in the credits or something. Same thing happened to Madonna last year, who couldn't get waitlisted for the same thing as Taylor.

If it's the second song in the credits, the music branch properly regards it as filler music with nothing to do with the movie except in a very minor way. Hardly anyone seeing the movie would even hear it, since by that time they have left the theater. The rule is completely appropriate.

However worthy the song is, its inclusion, if not actually in the movie, is as a marketing device to get the film more outside publicity and to sell more CDs or however people buy music these days. It isn't there as an element of the film, thus not eligible for a legitimate movie award.

I actually didn't notice the song playing during the credits as I left the theatre, I don't think it was "Safe and Sound" though.

Still disappointed Metric's "Blindness" and/or "Stadium Love" didn't make th soundtrack cut. Those two songs evoke the film so well.

THE HUNGER GAMES, 2012

I watched this earlier today. For me, this was a good and entertaining film for the most part. I thought the film seemed a little rushed overall, and I feel there were important details that were left out. I haven`t read the books, so I can`t compare the film to them. The ending did feel anticlimactic for me. I thought Jennifer Lawrence`s performance was the best thing about the film. Lawrence really did put a lot into this role, and it elevated the overall film for me. The other performances in the film were fine, but nothing to write home about. I didn`t think there was much chemistry between Katniss and Peeta. I was hoping to see more of Harrelson as Haymitch. I did have problems with different aspects of the film such as the screenplay and direction, etc. It is a flawed film, but Lawrence`s performance, and the fact that it is entertaining, make it enjoyable overall. I would be surprised if this film received any major nominations. It was a good film, but not major oscar nomination worthy imo.

I honestly wish this film would have been Rated R. I feel the PG-13 rating hurt the overall effectiveness of the film. I know it is all about making money though, but for subject matter like this, it was pretty tame. The film felt like it should have been more graphic and with stronger dialogue than what it had. There were multiple people in the theatre I was at that said it should have been Rated R, and I agreed with their opinion. Imagine if "Game of Thrones" was on a network like NBC. It would have to be so watered down.

Grade: B

This is a real good movie, with a world well constructed and with 2 lead actors that were really good in their roles, I'll love to see the sequels and I already bought the books, well done Miss Lawrence :))

Saw it on an advances screening three days ago, as it gets shown here two days before there in the US.

THE HUNGER GAMES

This was an effective visual version of an action packed literary piece. It might seem too fast-paced especially for those who have read the book; nevertheless, it was successful in capturing what the novel was about. For that alone, I give this two thumbs up.

The casting was mostly effective. I love how they brought all these character actors and gave them characters that fit like a glove. I don't think it's enough to specify her once again, but I'm just in love with Elizabeth Banks' Effie Trinket. Woody Harrelson's Haymitch, Stanley Tucci's cobalt haired intriguing host Caesar Flickerman, Lenny Kravitz' Cinna, and Donald Sutherland's Coriolanus Snow were just exactly what you had in mind while reading the novel. The casting of the representatives were very diverse as well, and though we don't get to see a lot of them, the important ones stood (Cato, Foxface, Glimmer, Thresh) enough. Rue, true enough, was a definite crowd favorite among the watchers. I have no issues with Josh Hutcherson's casting, but I don't think the chemistry with Jennifer Lawrence was effective enough to be translated from the book to the movie. Liam Hemsworth, on the other hand, despite minimal screen time elicits response from the crowd every single time.

But ultimately, it was the Jennifer Lawrence show. Her Katniss was gritty, raw, and effective. What I like the most about Lawrence's portrayal was that she was remarkable enough to stand out and give us a challenging female lead character to root for.

While some camera shots were over the top (we get it, you're running), I specifically love the colors in the earlier part because they made us feel as if we're being introduced to the their world. Ross was successful in setting the right mood and atmosphere of District 12 to the viewers, and he was able to maintain it until the end of the movie. Cinematography was astonishing, but my favorite (aside from Effie's costumes) is the art direction. It was just magnificent.

Grade: A-

Boxoffice update per Deadline:

Friday estimates are varied, could be between $60 to $75 million, and a 3-day weekend overall from $135 to $150m. (!!) Lionsgate saying THG has a matinee PSA of $7,800. Now, per Nikki Finke, it's zoomed past $9,900. Better than The Dark Knight ($9,806) and Twilight: Breaking Dawn 1 ($9,310) but still behind Harry Potter/Deathly Hallows Part 1 ($11,300) and Twilight: New Moon ($12,600).

Four-quadrant film, thy name is The Hunger Games...

Another encouraging sign at my screening; families, mostly, guys, girls (teenage, too) who were engrossed in the film that it wasn't a Twilight-esque throng that screamed every five minutes or so.  But laughs galore at the scene where the second parachute aid package came to Katniss and Peeta with the message,

"You call that a KISS?
                H"

Finished watching 'The Hunger Games', and it's a rare case where I enjoyed the film more than the book. For one, the movie's pacing is better, it expands the mythology a little more, and it doesn't lose what I liked most about the book- the characters, the ideas, and the setting. I think all involved did a great job, and big props to Jennifer Lawrence who basically carries the whole film on her shoulders. I'll expand on my review later tonight when I can... I'm honestly not a HUGE fan of the books, which I feel had strong ideas and characters, but weren't told especially well. I think the movie is very good though, better than the book. I'd give the film a solid 'A-'.
