I saw this with an open mind and actually some hopes of something entertaining. What I saw was a stunningly bland, uninteresting movie full of cliches and visual dullness and some awkward supporting performances by name actors that held little interest. It was tough to get through. I have no idea why anyone thinks Jennifer Lawrence will be a best actress nominee. She's a fine actress, but this was a by the numbers performance (no fault of hers) that I can't imagine more than a handful of acting branch members would rank #1 on their ballots. Congratulations to all involved for their great commercial success and having many fans. But I'd rather see another Transformers film than something as mediocre as this.

Nobody expects The Hunger Games to be a huge player for the major awards at Oscar. How absurd, to copy a style of response. But some of us have read the books, and am very glad for it, and the knowledge that they have spurred a generation of youth to start reading. Actually reading. And the premise of these books, is not so far-fetched, and is happening as I write this. Teaching young people about the potential horrors of a Totalitarian government, or a terrible Oligarchy, a Roman-esque military government, is never ever a bad thing. The cinematography in Hunger Games is very very good. Beautiful even. And Jennifer Lawrence is once again a marvel. She's the perfect Katniss. Nobody has to like THG of course, but I did. And after several viewings, I like it even more. This one made me cry, and more than once. I look forward to the other installments and hope they grow into something truly fabulous. I'll leave it here, although, there's far more I could say (and want to). LOL! The Sunne in Splendour; I prefer my Roses White |

Your opinion is as valid as mine, but for me the visual design (cinematography) was second-rate and unimaginative, and often obvious in the feeling it tried to convey. And Lawrence was for me uncharismatic and underplayed the role. I was looking forward to a female empowerment film - we need more of them. That this worked as well as it did I suspect is a sign of how few of them there are. The only reference to the Oscars I made of course was to best actress, where Lawrence has been frequently mentioned as a contender. So I don't get what was absurd about my reference to this.

I also found the film bland and derivative. The contest between those kids was boring and the only interesting action was happening off the "field of play." I doubt I'll be back for the 2nd and 3rd films. I found nothing special or awards worthy about The Hunger Games. |

Aw, what a sweet little triumvirate! Alice, get over it. Twilight, is done, and no more for now. Fishbiscuit has earned the right to his opinion, and THG wasnt made for the guy above him, otherwise, we'd all be watching people sitting around eating soup. Your presence is beginning to irk me considerably. Posters are finding you to be disruptive, and, imo, you are bringing down the calibre of this site. I'm asking you to stop with your Twilight love in every single thread, including game threads and moratoriums. Please stop. I have a very high tolerance for most (adjective), but you are not one of them. The Sunne in Splendour; I prefer my Roses White |

Fish, the sequals are already in the works, and they've cast some very interesting actors to fill in the characters. I suspect they will make even more waves with the Box Office.

Alicecullen, your voice is welcome here. And I reject the idea that Hunger Games wasn't made for me. To me, any film of merit isn't aimed at just a narrow audience, but can get reactions from a wide range of people beyond a specific group. My very wide tastes in film was established here a long time ago, and I would contend that I seek out and love more different kinds of film that anyone else here.

You never can tell. I tend to like the 2nd film in a series more than the 1st one. Will the director be the same for round 2? Maybe a different vision of this world will sway me. |

Francis Lawrence of Water for Elephants, I Am Legend and Constantine is directing the next segment. I find him slightly more interesting than Gary Ross, but not much. I found no directorial point of view in HG - just a super cautious transference of the plot to film with minimal imagination. Plus, the whole production looked cheesy. This clearly helped their bottom line, but made the film less interesting. As mediocre as I found the Twilight films to be, they were much more cinematically well crafted and emotionally engaging. Neither series is close to the quality of the Harry Potter films though.

(haven't seen the latest Twilight movie).... but - and this has nothing to do with The Hunger Games for me - I actually thought that the first Twilight film had good aspects to it (big fan of the visual design, which was completely abandoned in the sequels), and I bought the chemistry between Pattinson and Stewart (no jokes about their private lives, please). Certainly not championing for it to get the Criterion treatment but it was, to me at least, a promising start to those films. |

While I appreciate your support for the HP series, Twilight's cinematography is god awful. Lawrence really did carry that film well, and would be worthy of Best Actress recognition. |

I am always serious. Feel free to disagree, but although I am not really a fan of any of them, the craft and cinematic skill of the Twilight films (particularly the first one) was for me superior to The Hunger Games, which was at best routine and competent. But none of them for me are anything special, so I'm hardly making a case for any particular importance to the Twilight series either. They are all examples of the banality of contemporary American mass-audience studio-produced films marketed to the nth degree, with little opportunity for anything much creative to get past audience research screenings.
