CULTURE CORNER!

LUCERNE FESTIVAL 2009
A concert series recorded in high definition and dedicated mostly to the symphonies of Gustav Mahler (which I haven't watched yet), but I was blown away by the opening performance of Sergei Prokofiev's Piano Concerto No. 3 in C major, Op. 26, featuring Yuja Wang on the piano and Claudio Abbado conducting the Lucerne Festival Orchestra. The musicians knock this number out of the ballpark (esp. the violent third movement, Allegro, ma non troppo). Ms Wang is a charismatic and talented performer who no doubt will continue on with a brilliant career. Also, a glittering and distinguished Swiss audience on the banks of the Lake Lucerne within sight of the Alps--so far I've recognized Simon Rattle and, I think, Kofi Annan, in the audience.

ZEN: RATKING
Detective Aurelio Zen not only solves a couple of new murders but more impressively skirts the even more dangerous politics of the Roman police department. Highly enjoyable Brit mystery series that thankfully is filmed on location in Rome and the Italian countryside. But I have one quibble: This is the second episode (of the three-part BBC series) in which one of the characters uses a homophobic epithet. Granted, no one expects all characters to be P.C. but I don't recall any slurs directed at other minorities (except maybe the Swiss, who are mocked for their lack of congeniality, which regrettably seems one of those stereotypes that is all too true)...

^I love "All in the Family." Archie Bunker is such a great character. I don`t judge shows and films like you do. Your politics should not play a role in how you feel about a show or film. I don`t do that when I am judging something, but it seems that you do.


I`m very surprised that you are even watching this show. If you continue to watch, I hope you watch the remaining seasons with an open mind. It really is one of the greatest television comedies of all time in my opinion. I hope you will continue to watch, but if it`s not for you, then that is okay.

Oh, I agree with you that ALL IN THE FAMILY is one of the greatest TV comedies of all time. Archie Bunker is an opinionated, prejudiced, ignorant buffoon, but unlike many rightwing conservatives, he also has some redeeming qualities. I especially enjoy those scenes when Lionel, Archie's young black neighbor, toys with Archie's lamentable but hilariously reactionary ideas about black people.

The way that you posted seemed to me that you hated the show. The right-wing always has redeeming qualities, but you just don`t agree with them. Tongue out
