I’m new to the message board. First time. I don’t know where else to post this, so please forgive if I haven’t done it right. Nevertheless, my post needs a response.
I heard (elsewhere) that Timothy Olyphant will be on Derby Chat next Wednesday? Is this true?
Justiified is my favorite show currently on television, and Olyphant’s portrayal of Raylan Givens and the snap, crackle, pop dialogue are only two of the reasons why. Walton Goggins would be yet another.
If I could ask any question, I would want to know what episode he submitted for Emmy consideration? Gosh, there are 2 or 3 I would have suggested. I would have suggested the one when Arlo dies. His scene at his deathbed and again when he hears the news were perfection for the character. The last episode with Winona and his unborn baby threatened was another showcase for him, too.
I so hope he is nominated this year because he truly deserves it. He plays Raylan so cool, yet fallible. This season, Raylan was put in just about every situation the writers could possibly come up with …. and he came out of each one in a very believable, true to the character fashion. Elmore Leonard would approve!June 14, 2013 at 11:36 pm #458309
I am in total agreement Dolphin, Mr. Olyphant plays his role to perfection, his performance is so subtle he makes it look effortless and that is perhaps the reason he has been ignored (hopefully up until now). The writers of the show also deserve recognition for giving the characters consistently humourous, lyrical dialogue.June 15, 2013 at 12:22 am #458310
Yes, Tim will be with us next Weds between 1 and 2 p.m. PT on “Derby Talk” — he’ll be joined by Aaron Paul (“Breaking Bad”). We certainly plan to ask them both about which episodes they plan to submit to the Emmy judges. But remember: Tim didn’t get nommed last year.June 17, 2013 at 9:33 am #458311
Thanks, Tom, for these chats and for asking the questions we would ask, if given the opportunity.
Yes, I am painfully aware Timothy was not nominated last year. It’s a tough category, and his absense was a glaring omission, imo. Be that as it may, he deserves a nomination …. ‘Hillbilly factor’ or not, it is a fine, fine show.
I’ll be listening. 🙂June 18, 2013 at 2:55 am #458312
I’m also looking forward to this interview. I’ve ejoyed your others, very much, especially the one with Natalie Zea.
While the other actors likely to be nominated in this category, Bryan Cranston, Damian Lewis, Kevin Spacey, et al, do a wonderful job, none of them have the ability (or are given the opportunity) to combine dramatic turns with subtle humor the way Tim Olyphant does on Justified. While some of the credit for this goes to the fantastic (and also under-appreciated) writing staff, much of it goes to TO’s ability to use a look or a gesture to communicate what’s brewing under the surface of taciturn Raylan Givens. He doesn’t give big dramatic speeches, or have huge emotional breakdowns/outbursts. Perhaps that renders him less noticebale to Emmy voters…I wonder if he thinks so.
The other thing that makes Justified refreshing is that it is one of too few series NOT set in the over-exposed cities of New York, Miami, Los Angeles, or Chicago. The show’s portrayal of its Kentucky setting and the people who live there might not be flawless, but it’s sure nice to see an unexplored area of the country shown. Hey, Hollywood…we’re interesting, too.June 19, 2013 at 2:46 pm #458313
I am so pissed. Show me anywhere on your homepage where there is anything about a Derby Chat with Timothy Olyphant? I see nothing … nada.June 19, 2013 at 3:20 pm #458314
It was live two hours ago and is now being edited. We have been promoting if for over a week, so everyone should have been aware it was today. We should have it available to watch very soon, and it will be active for quite a few weeks.June 19, 2013 at 8:00 pm #458315
I’ve been on Gold Derby for a long time and know how to navigate the site. I was aware the broadcast was today at 1:30 p.m. PST. And when I logged onto this site to listen in … there was nothing on the site about the live chat. There is still nothing on the site about this chat with Timothy Olyphant. Please, I beg you to show me where? Because it’s not there.
Maybe you need to talk to your webmasters?????
Btw, I’m a member of a Timothy Olyphant fan group, and we were all wanting to hear this live broadcast …. I’m not the only one who complained that they came here to this site and could not find it. That is why I said am pissed, and I stand by what I said. We promoted this on our fan site.
Now, if you all want to apologize for … whatever happened … that’s fine. But DO NOT dismiss what I am saying … in all sincerity and honesty. Thank you.June 19, 2013 at 9:23 pm #458316
The clip is up, and thank you for that. (But it does not negate the fact that we couldn’t get into the broadcast this afternoon.)June 19, 2013 at 9:31 pm #458317
I was involved in the chat, and it was absolutely live on the top portion of the home page from 1:00 to 2:00pm PT. I was watching it while I was participating. Sorry you couldn’t find it, but this is the same way we have done it for the past few weeks. As soon as it was over, the video box was removed so that they could edit it and upload to YouTube. The embed code was then moved back over to our site, where you can watch it now.June 20, 2013 at 10:38 am #458318
Not to belabor the issue …. but I’m not the only one who couldn’t find it. On the home page. You all need to know that.
That aside, great interview!! So you’re the biggest Justified fan of the critics, Boomer? You have met your match on the fan side. 🙂 I want to know is what was Timothy’s Emmy submission episode? He’s refreshingly modest about awards, etc., and he did a great job in deflecting credit from himself and pointing out all the other truly great performances on the show.
I would think he would have submitted either ‘Outlaw,’ the episode where Arlo died or ‘Ghosts,’ the season finale which included that great clip you aired with Raylan and Nicky Augustine (the great Mike O’Malley) in the limo. Which episode do you think was his best of the season?
June 20, 2013 at 12:19 pm #458319
He should probably submit “Ghosts,” but we unfortunately did not get to ask that question yesterday.June 24, 2013 at 9:27 am #458320
Because of the potential voter, who may not know the 4 season background of the relationship between Raylan and Arlo, I think you may be right about submitting ‘Ghosts.’September 15, 2013 at 10:37 pm #458321
