Now beginning to think that Stormzy could be a threat to Ed Sheeran for some of those awards such as British Male/British Album. British Group could go several ways, but I’m thinking The xx might get it over Wolf Alice.
BRITISH ARTIST VIDEO OF THE YEAR (online voting)
– Harry Styles – ‘Sign Of The Times’
Beyonce’s win was far from certain for me, because she was one of four artists with albums from Pop/R&B, while Beck had the only album from Rock/Folk/Alternative genres.
Her album had high critical acclaim as did Morning Phase, but while there is a correlation between acclaim and getting a nomination, it doesn’t seem to be a good predictor of…[Read more]
NME awards in London a few days ago were interesting. Female artists took quite a number of wins, including Best Track, Best International Solo Artist and Best International Band. Perhaps influenced by the Grammys and the lack of female wins in major categories.
I’m wondering if…[Read more]
alex00g2 replied to the topic Ed Sheeran: Would he really beat Bruno Mars, had he been nominated? in the forum Music 1 month, 2 weeks ago
Yes, I think this is the key, who does Ed Sheeran replace? Replace Jay Z with Ed and Kendrick might have a real chance.
Replace Gambino or Lorde with Ed Sheeran in AOTY and I could see him picking up enough Country, Rock and Pop votes to take the award from Bruno.
We can add Adam Granduciel from ‘The War on Drugs’ who won Best Rock Album.
There are so many great records that when you grow older, you’re like, “Oh man, this is the best record ever made.” And you’re like, “Oh it didn’t get nominated or win a Grammy.” It’s countless, how many amazing, classic American records haven’t been knighted or whate…
It would be interesting to know the demographics of voters and what role they play in the industry, e.g. producers, songwriters, session musicians, vocalists or some other role.
I suspect that a lot of people voting in the pop field are not people actively working in pop music and so name recognition and sales are a major factor.

I’m pretty sure I said this a long time back, no album with more than one explicit track in the track listing has won AOTY (since 2000 at least) and they weren’t going to give to an album full of explicit tracks this time.
So that rules out the rap albums. Even Lorde had 6 out of 11 explicit tracks on Melodrama. 24K was the safe conservative choice.
Her latest instagram post caption is “rehearsing my favourite fleetwood mac song ever for tomorrow night brb might cry @haimtheband u guys feeling this too?” which is for the MusiCares concert at Radio City Music Hall, two nights before the…[Read more]
The Alicia Keys nomination does seem a bit odd. It appears there was a 16 month eligibility period for nominees which ended in late 2017. Given that Camila Cabello released her album after the end of the eligibility period, it’s possible that she wouldn’t have been a good choice for this year, but we could expect to see her nominated for…[Read more]
She was ill. Her performances at Coachella, Glastonbury, Governors Ball and other festivals were widely praised as were her awards show performances including MMVAs in Canada, ARIAs awards in Australia and her 2016 BRIT awards David Bowie tribute.
If the story about Jay-Z choosing not to perform is true, then there will be just three nominees…[Read more]
Do American artists always go to the BRIT awards when nominated? London is quite close to the US, compared to the journey from Lorde’s home to NYC.
I’m sure she will come if they ask her to perform. Going back several years now, all the AOTY nominees get invited to perform.
The very few exceptions had (a) performed at the Grammys in the previous…[Read more]

Most of those predictions from Paul Grein look about right. I’m sure there will be some that are wrong, just like he was wrong about Harry Styles in the nominations, but we all guessed he wasn’t getting in.
Nothing in that list stands out as being totally unexpected, although I do wonder if they might split ROTY/SOTY.
AOTY going to the safe…[Read more]
Lorde has a US tour coming up, so she would want to perform to promote her tour. From reading the article it sounds like they didn’t want her to perform. Politics perhaps?
With no performance it’s a lose-lose for her. If she loses AOTY, she loses with no nominations in any other category and no performance. She gets one second of TV time when…[Read more]
When I was looking at the 2017 Year-End Lists thread, I noticed 6 of the last 7 AOTY winners were Top 20 in the aggregate year end lists.
They might not have been the most acclaimed in the reviews written on the week they were released, but they made it into the Top 20 at the end of the year.
This includes: The Suburbs, 21, Random Access…[Read more]
You might have to spell out which pop album you are talking about. If it was top 10 in all the critics year end lists, then it should be top 10 in the aggregate lists and I can’t see which one you mean.
Melodrama was…[Read more]

I’d love to believe that all those voters with a job and a passion for music, would listen to at least the top 5 best selling and top 5 most acclaimed songs and albums in each category before making a choice.
But here is one nomination that might be considered a result of voting along “party” lines and name recognition.
Coldplay – Kalei…[Read more]
On Metacritic, the top 5 albums seem to be stable, although SZA could still get the #3 spot from LCD Soundsysttem.
1. 95 DAMN. by Kendrick Lamar — 129 points
2. 91 Melodrama by Lorde — 65.5 points
3. 86 American Dream by LCD Soundsystem — 53 points
4. 86 CTRL by SZA — 51.…[Read more]
