Gold Derby's music experts David Schnelwar and Darrin Dortch diagree over who will win and who should win this race.
BEST FEMALE R&B VOCAL PERFORMANCE
“Gone Already,” Faith Evans
“Everything To Me,” Monica
“Tired,” Kelly Price
“Holding You Down,” Jazmine Sullivan
David's take: Fortunately for this year's Best Female R&B Vocal Performance nominees, Alicia Keys, Beyonce and Mary J. Blige were not nominated this year. All three have won multiple times this past decade. This year there will be a first time Grammy winner in Best Female R&B Vocal Performance. Monica and Fantasia are also nominated for Best R&B Album. Fantasia has a slight edge over Monica because her song "Bittersweet" was nominated for Best R&B Song. Faith Evans and Kelly Price are not likely to upset. I am going out on a limb and predicting Jazmine Sullivan. This is Jazmine's third consecutive nomination in this category. And she is the only one who has been nominated in the General Field previously. I am still impressed that she was able to get nominated for Best New Artist in 2008 instead of Sara Bareilles, Leona Lewis and Katy Perry.
Will win: Jazmine Sullivan, "Holding You Down (Going In Circles)"
Should win: Jazmine Sullivan, "Holding You Down (Going In Circles)"
Spoiler: Fantasia, "Bittersweet"
Darrin's take: Alicia Keys was shockingly (and undeservingly) snubbed here so there’s no immediate frontrunner. This is Sullivan’s eighth nomination in three years and she’s a past Best New Artist nominee so she’s definitely a dark horse here. Monica’s single was a long running #1 hit on the R&B charts and she’s also nominated for R&B Album so she could spoil as well. However, voters will likely award Fantasia her very first Grammy. Fantasia’s track was a Top 10 hit on the R&B charts, is nominated for R&B Song, and Fantasia herself is also up for R&B Album. Fantasia will likely also garner sympathy votes due to her personal troubles this past year.
Will win: Fantasia, "Bittersweet"
Should Win: Fantasia, "Bittersweet"
Spoiler: Monica and Jazmine Sullivan
