Gold Derby's music experts Darrin Dortch and David Schnelwar disagree about who will win, who should win and who could play spoiler in this category. They have already predicted both Best Rock Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocals and Best Rock Solo Performance with Vocals.
BEST ROCK SONG
“Angry World,” Neil Young
“Little Lion Man,” Mumford & Sons
“Radioactive,” Kings of Leon
“Tighten Up,” The Black Keys
Darrin's take: Best New Artist nominees Mumford & Sons were snubbed in Rock Duo/Group and Rock Album so it’s unlikely they’ll prevail here. Kings of Leon won this category last year, but they surely won’t repeat for this flopped song. Neil Young will probably lose his solo performance nomination for this track, so he’ll likely lose here, too. Muse and The Black Keys will duke it out for the win again and the Black Keys have the edge since their song was such a breakthrough for them.
Will win: "Tighten Up," The Black Keys
Should win: “Tighten Up," The Black Keys
Spoiler: “Resistance," Muse
David's take: None of these five nominees are nominated for Record of the Year or Song of the Year. Mumford and Sons are nominated for Best New Artist but failed to receive a nomination for Best Rock Performance By a Duo or Group with Vocals. No rock band has won in this category without that nomination. Neil Young has had three previous failed attempts and is the lone solo artist in this category, but is not expected to win this year. Kings of Leon won in this category for "Use Somebody" due to their nominations for Record of the Year and Song of the Year. "Radioactive" was not as big a hit, so is not likely to win this year. The Black Keys's "Tighten Up" is possible but I am going out on a limb and predicting Muse's "Resistance."
Will win: "Resistance," Muse
Should win: "Resistance," Muse
Spoiler: "Angry World," Neil Young
