Can 'Family Guy' get back into Comedy Series race at Emmys? [Video]

In 2009, "Family Guy" abandoned the Emmys animated category after four losses and entered the comedy series race. Against all odds -- the only animated show to ever contend for Best Comedy Series was the first season of "The Flintstones" back in 1961 -- "Family Guy" reaped a bid. As show's executive producer Mark Hentemann admits, "It was shocking!" The seventh season of "Family Guy" vied against "Entourage," "Flight of the Conchords," "How I Met Your Mother," "The Office," "Weeds," and eventual winner "30 Rock."

Hentemann explains the show's Emmy strategy to Gold Derby. "We had internal discussions in the writers' room, and it seemed like we were much more akin to the other primetime comedies than we were to children's shows in animation. We assumed we would not get anywhere, and so it was a great surprise when we got the nomination."

"Family Guy" entered the top laffer race again last year but failed to make the cut. This year, our experts and editors figure "Family Guy" to be in the running in a strong field of competitors. If the show is nominated, the judging panels will see a selection from these episodes: "And I'm Joyce Kinney," "Halloween on Spooner Street," "New Kidney in Town," "Trading Places," and the one-hour "Road to the North Pole" (Hentemann calls that "an epic episode...that was a bear to do" with "our biggest orchestra ever").
