Lady Gaga took to the airwaves Thursday to tout her appearance on the upcoming MTV Video Music Awards. She leads off a lineup of performers that includes Adele, Bruno Mars, Lil Wayne, Chris Brown and Young The Giant. The kudos air across the MTV family of channels on Sunday, Aug. 28 live from the Nokia Theater in Los Angeles.
Dropping by MTV's Time Squares studio, Gaga said, "I have a really big announcement, but I thought as usual, instead of me announcing it, I'd let the Little Monsters do it for me." Her fans then unfurled the banner, which read "GaGa To Open VMAs." The crowd that had gathered to catch a glimpse of the music diva roared their approval.
Last year, Lady Gaga reigned as queen of the VMAs winning eight of her record 13 nominations. She was the first female artist to receive two Video of the Year bids -- "Bad Romance" and "Telephone" -- and "Romance" won that top prize, along with six others. Those seven wins made it the second most honored video in VMA history ("Sledgehammer" by Peter Gabriel won nine in 1987).
However, this year, she was limited to just four nominations. Her audacious seven-and-a-half-minute video for "Born This Way" received only two nominations (Best Female Video and Best Video with a Message), while "Judas" contends in two technical races (Art Direction and Choreography).
Gaga admitted she was honored to be asked to open the show: "It means the world to me. I just feel really blessed every day. I have the most amazing fans." The cablecaster released several black-and-white promo videos featuring the singer-songwriter. In the first one below, she performs a jazz version of her new hit "You and I" at the piano while stripping off her black bra. She uses a piece of sheet music to cover up as she talks to the camera.
In the other video, Gaga discusses her songwriting and musical inspirations. As she reveals, "Sometimes I'm really happy when I write music, and sometimes I'm really angry. Sometimes I'm really drunk and sometimes I'm super sober. You never know why or if you write music.'
