Super Bowl weekend is usually a slow one at the box office but several Oscar contenders managed to attract even larger audiences than last week. However, there were others that are almost at the end of their runs.

"The Artist" (The Weinstein Co.) – week 11
$2,565,000 in 1,005 theaters (+ 108); PSA: $2,552; Cumulative: $20,584,244
Expanding into more than 1,000 theaters, meant a 33% drop in PSA. However, it has now topped the $20 million mark.

Bottom line: This Best Picture frontrunner has far outgrossed 2009 champ "The Hurt Locker." That is a testament to the appeal of this silent black-and-white French import.

"A Separation" (Sony Pictures Classics) – week 6
$324,293 in 40 theaters (+ 9); PSA: $8,107; Cumulative: $1,302,741
Despite adding 9 theaters, its PSA dropped by only 10%.

Bottom line: This Foreign Language Oscar contender is on track to do better than last year's winner "In a Better World."

"Hugo" (Paramount) – week 11
$2,310,000 in 1,030 theaters (+ 65); PSA: $2,243; Cumulative: $61,949,039
After adding 50% more theaters last week in light of its leading 11 Oscar bids, it topped 1,000 screens this week and maintained an impressive PSA for this late in a run.

Bottom line: Even with a Best Picture win looking less likely, there remains interest in this movie.

"The Descendants" (Fox Searchlight) – week 12
$4,600,000 in 2,038 theaters (+ 37); PSA: $2,257; Cumulative: $65,522,652
Aftert tripling its screens to top 2,000 last weekend, it added even more theaters this frame and  ranked #8 for the week. That the PSA was off by only 20% says something about the staying power of this picture.

Bottom line: This will easily top helmer Alexander Payne's "Sideways" which took in $70 milion and will go much higher if George Clooney wins the Best Actor Oscar.

"Albert Nobbs" (Roadside Attractions) - week 2
$533,610 in 245 theaters (unchanged); PSA: $2,178; Cumulative - $1,571,533
This continued in the same screens and PSA was off by only 23% which signals good word-of-mouth.

Bottom line: Next weekend will be telling as to whether this film expands further or contracts.

"Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close" (Warner Brothers) – week 6
$3,935,000 in 2,505 theaters (- 125); PSA: $1,567; Cumulative - $26,792,676
After a bump from that Best Picture bid, this film slid back by 50%.

Bottom line: Being able to tout the film as an Oscar contender may not be enough to keep interest in this hard sell.

"The Iron Lady" (The Weinstein Co.) – week 6
$1,843,000 in 1,021 theaters (- 243); PSA: $1,805; Cumulative: $20,600,349
The PSA dropped below $2,000 but the film still ranked #15 for the week and reached $20 million.

Bottom line: That this British picture has appealed to American audiences is a testament to Meryl Streep

"The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo" (Sony) - week 7
$1,025,000 in 668 theaters (- 534); PSA: $1,534; Cumulative: $99,906,465
The lack of a Best Picture nom has hindered any growth in demand.

Bottom line: The film will reach $100 million but not much more than that.

"War Horse" (Buena Vista) - week 7
$916,000 in 1,163 theaters (- 698); PSA: $788; Cumulative: $77,251,607
This lost another one-third of its theaters despite that Best Picture bid and saw its PSA dip below four figures.

Bottom line: Expect this one to fade even further before Oscar night.

"Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy" (Focus) - week 10
$694,893 in 302 theaters (- 108); PSA: $2,301; Cumulative: $21,209,585
The Best Actor nod for Gary Oldman kept the PSA fairly static.

Bottom line: This taut spy thriler should keep audience attention till Oscar weekend.

"My Week with Marilyn" (The Weinstein Co.) – week 11
$254,000 in 171 theaters (- 15); PSA: $1,485; Cumulative: $13,005,158
Despite a slight drop in screens, the PSA stayed about the same as moviegoers turned out to see nominees Michelle Williams and Kenneth Branagh

Bottom line: Expect it to play to this level till Oscar weekend.
