TV Academy approves new "reality" peer group. From the press release: "The Academy of Television Arts & Sciences Board of Governors voted this evening to approve the creation of the first-ever Reality Peer Group and rename the current Nonfiction Peer Group as the Documentary Peer Group. Prior to tonight’s vote, both reality and documentary television professionals comprised the membership of the Nonfiction Peer Group. The new Reality Peer Group will be made up of Academy members engaged in reality programming for national exhibition. The renamed Documentary Peer Group will continue to include members involved in documentary programming, produced for informational or entertainment value by programmers and filmmakers, as opposed to documentaries produced by news organizations for national exhibition."
"Godspell" will perform at the Tony Awards despite its snub: "BroadwayWorld has confirmed that the revival of 'Godspell' on Broadway, despite a lack of Tony nominations, will make an appearance on the 2012 broadcast to perform a selection from the musical. (Historically, performances have usually consisted of only shows that have been nominated for Best Musical/Revival). At this time, there is no official word or confirmation on who, or what the cast will be performing." BROADWAY WORLD
Cynthia Nixon talks about her Tony nomination for "Wit": "I’ve been nominated before so I kinda know a little bit of the drill. When you’re nominated and you’re part of the Broadway season in that way, it's really fun, because you get to go to all of these events and see other people that you admire. I just saw a bunch of people from 'Peter and the Starcatcher' who I know and love. I love that show. There’s something so special about it. Whether at the finish line you win or not, you have four weeks of basking in a golden light and hanging out with the coolest people in New York, as far as a theatre rat like me is concerned!" Voice-acting legend June Foray nominated for an Emmy: "Springfield native June L. Foray has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame and so many awards she says she doesn’t have enough room for them on the cocktail table and walls of her Woodland Hills, Calif., home. But there’s sure to be a place for one more: Foray, 94, has been nominated for a Daytime Entertainment Emmy Award for Outstanding Performer in an Animated Program for voicing the role of Mrs. Cauldron on 'The Garfield Show' on Cartoon Network. It is first Emmy nomination for the voice legend behind Rocky the Flying Squirrel and Natasha Fatale on 'The Bullwinkle Show,' Nell Fenwick on 'The Dudley Do-Right Show,' Cindy Lou Who in 'How the Grinch Stole Christmas,' Granny on 'The Bugs Bunny Show,' Grandmother Fa in 'Mulan,' Grammi on 'Gummi Bears,' Jokey Smurf on 'The Smurfs' and Talky Tina in 'The Twilight Zone.'" "The Exorcist" will be remade as a TV miniseries: "Sean Durkin, the writer-director of last year’s excellent but criminally underseen Elizabeth Olsen thriller 'Martha Marcy May Marlene,' is adapting the fiendish classic into a ten-episode television series, this time backed by Morgan Creek and produced by Roy Lee, the executive producer of films like 'The Departed' and 'The Ring' ... 'The Exorcist' TV series won't be formally shopped to networks for another two weeks, but executives are already calling seeking meetings to inquire about landing the Durkin update." VULTURE
Kanye West debuts an ambitious film at Cannes: "Kanye West has eighteen Grammys, but on Wednesday night in Cannes, the rapper-designer-director placed his bets on seven screens. He debuted 'Cruel Summer,' a film-cum-art-instillation featuring Kid Cudi and Lebanese actress Razane Jammal, to a crowd of about 200. The premiere was staged at a pop-up pyramid in a parking lot by the water. Viewers were surrounded by the screens, on which the story of a thief (Cudi) who falls in love with a blind Arab woman (Jammal) unfolded. The woman's father says that Cudi's character can only marry her if she cures her blindness." HUFFINGTON POST
