It is no surprise that Film Independent announced Tuesday that the 28th annual edition of the Spirit Awards will take place on Feb. 23.
As usual, these kudos are being handed out one day before the Oscars. Submissions are now being accepted until Oct. 16. Entries must be American, 70 minutes or more, cost less than $20 million and had a commerical run of at least one week. Nominations will be announced on Nov. 27 at 10 a.m. PT.
Last year, the awardsfest returned to its traditional time and place -- mid afternoon on Santa Monica beach. There is no word as to whether it will be back at the beach again and what time it will take place. However, we do know that the ceremony will air on IFC. In the past, this has been an edited version of the afternoon affair that screens in the evening.
Last year, "The Artist" won four Indie Spirit prizes -- Best Picture, Director, Actor (Jean Dujardin) and Cinematography -- and repeated in all but the last category at the Oscars. In so doing, it became the first film since "Platoon" to win the top prize from both sets of kudos.
