Jim Parsons will join a very exclusive club if he wins Comedy Actor for the third year running at the upcoming Emmys. The star of "The Big Bang Theory" would be the fifth fellow to achieve that feat.
It has been 24 years since Michael J. Fox prevailed in this category for "Family Ties" three times in a row (1986-1988). Before that, the accomplishment was claimed by Carroll O'Connor for "All in the Family" (1977-1979) and Don Adams for "Get Smart" (1967-1969). Although the category title changed names a few times early on, Dick Van Dyke also won three consecutive Emmys for "The Dick Van Dyke Show" (1964-1966).
Yes, Kelsey Grammer ("Frasier") won four times. And John Lithgow ("3rd Rock from the Sun") and Tony Shalhoub ("Monk") each prevailed three times. However, none of them had three consecutive victories.
For this year's Emmy judging panel, Parsons has submitted the episode "The Werewolf Transformation". In the segment, his persnickety character Sheldon Cooper refuses to get a haircut while his long-time barber is in the hospital.
According to our exclusive odds, Parsons is in a very tight race (at 15 to 8) just behind Louis C.K. ("Louie") who has odds of 13 to 8. Their rival nominees are two-time champ Alec Baldwin ("30 Rock"), first-time nominee Don Cheadle ("House of Lies"), 2009 supporting winner Jon Cryer ("Two and a Half Men") and four-time also-ran Larry David ("Curb Your Enthusiasm").
