Last year, all four Oscar acting champs first won at the Golden Globes. Meryl Streep ("The Iron Lady"), Jean Dujardin ("The Artist"), Octavia Spencer ("The Help"), and Christopher Plummer ("Beginners") used that Globe momentum to help their Oscar campaigns. The other two early winners - George Clooney ("The Descendants") and Michelle Williams ("My Week with Marilyn") - were at least propelled to Oscar nominations for those roles.

Races this time around could be equally as compelling and could also impact the entire awards season.

Leading contenders on the dramatic side are "Anna Karenina," "Argo," "Beasts of the Southern Wild," "Django Unchained," "Hitchcock," "The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey," "Life of Pi," "Lincoln," "The Master," and "Zero Dark Thirty."

For actors, former Globe winners Ben Affleck ("Argo"), Daniel Day-Lewis ("Lincoln"), Jamie Foxx ("Django Unchained"), Joaquin Phoenix ("The Master"), Denzel Washington ("Flight") might be facing off against past nominee Anthony Hopkins ("Hitchcock") and rookie John Hawkes ("The Sessions").

Among the dramatic ladies, keep an eye on past champs Marion Cotillard ("Rust and Bone"), Helen Mirren ("Hitchcock"), former nominees Jennifer Lawrence ("The Hunger Games") and Keira Knightley ("Anna Karenina"), plus rookies Emmanuelle Riva ("Amour") and Quvenzhane Wallis ("Beasts of the Southern Wild").

In the comedy/musical field, expect a showdown between "Silver Linings Playbook" and "Les Miserables" for the top race. Other competitors could be "The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel," "Hope Springs," "Hyde Park on Hudson," "Magic Mike," "Moonrise Kingdom," "Quartet," "Take This Waltz," and "This is 40."

Among actors, look for previous champs Johnny Depp ("Dark Shadows"), Tommy Lee Jones ("Hope Springs"), Bill Murray ("Hyde Park on Hudson"), and Mark Wahlberg ("Ted"), past nominees Jack Black ("Bernie") and Hugh Jackman ("Les Miserables"), and the never-nominated Bradley Cooper ("Silver Linings Playbook"), Paul Rudd ("This is 40"), and Channing Tatum ("Magic Mike").

For actresses, the frontrunner might be past nominee Jennifer Lawrence ("Silver Linings Playbook") up against a bunch of previous winners: Judi Dench ("The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel"), Laura Linney ("Hyde Park on Hudson"), Maggie Smith ("Quartet"), Meryl Streep ("Hope Springs"), Barbra Streisand ("The Guilt Trip"), and Michelle Williams ("Take This Waltz").
