When we asked Derbyites in our message boards how many Oscar nominations might be nabbed by "The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey" when it opens in December, a riot broke out. Passionate "Hobbit" fans made outrageous claims while detractors stamped down expectations.

"The Hobbit" is a prequel to the "Lord of the Rings" trilogy, of course, which was generously hailed by Oscar voters, who gave the series 17 awards out of 30 nominations.
