After making an effort at the 2012 Emmy Awards in the drama field, "Smash" will now be entered into the comedy/musical categories at the next Golden Globe Awards. Also, none of the regular cast members - including Debra Messing and Katharine McPhee - will be competing as leads. All actors and actresses will be eligible as supporting performers.
"Smash" is the latest show to change categories at the Globes. This comes on the heels of the news that "American Horror Story: Asylum" would be entered as a miniseries at the Globes and a drama at the Screen Actors Guild Awards.
Since the SAG Awards have no designated musical categories, "Smash" will attempt to gain nods as a drama at that ceremony. The show debuted in February, so this is the first awards cycle for both the Globes and SAG.
Golden Globe nominees will be announced on Dec. 13. The ceremony will be held at the Beverly Hilton on Jan. 13. SAG Awards nominees will be announced on Dec. 12. That ceremony will be held at the Shrine Auditorium on Jan. 27.
"Smash" only received one major nomination at the Emmy Awards this past September - Uma Thurman as Best Drama Guest Actress. With that one sole nod, Emmy rules state that the show must always be entered as a drama in future seasons. If it had received no bids at all, it could have changed Emmy categories as well.
