Will 'The Hobbit' end with an Oscar-winning song?

Oscar winner Peter Jackson turned to fellow New Zealander Neil Finn to pen a tune for the first film in "The Hobbit" trilogy, "An Unexpected Journey."

Finn, who fronted the chart-topping Split Enz and Crowded House, does double duty, crooning the "Song of the Lonely Mountain" over the end credits of the picture.

He says the song was inspired by the work of the dwarves who populate this first of three prequels to "The Lord of the Rings" trilogy. As Finn recounts to Rolling Stone, Jackson encouraged him to get in a "dwarven state of mind."

The result is a song that soars, moving from the mines where the dwarves toil to the heights they must cross. Take a listen here

It certainly sounds like an Oscar contender, in the vein of the two nominated tracks that played over the end credits of the first and last of the "Lord of the Rings" movies.

"The Fellowship of the Ring" (2001) concluded with "May It Be," co-written and sung by Irish New Age artist Enya. It lost to "If I Didn't Have You" from "Monsters, Inc." which was the first win for Randy Newman after 15 losses in various music categories.

Two years later, "The Return of the King," went 11 for 11 at the Oscars, including a win for Best Song for the tune "Into the West," co-written and sung by Annie Lennox
