Looks like Steven Spielberg ("Lincoln") is poised for a classic, and quite dramatic comeback at the Oscars. Twelve of the 28 experts polled by Gold Derby predict he'll win Best Director, giving him 27 to 10 odds.
Eight pundits pick Ben Affleck ("Argo," 10 to 3 odds), six back Kathryn Bigelow ("Zero Dark Thirty," 10 to 3) and two choose Tom Hooper ("Les Miserables," 10 to 1).
One month ago, Affleck and Hooper slugged it out for the lead. Hooper led with the most pundits (10, compared to 9 for Affleck), but Affleck actually had better odds because he ranked higher consistently across the ballots of all Oscarologists (4/5 odds compared to 10/3 for Affleck). Only five pundits picked Spielberg, giving him 4 to 1 odds back then.
