"There's always panic when you're playing someone as iconic as Hitchcock," admitted Toby Jones about his role as the legendary film director Alfred Hitchcock in the recent HBO biopic "The Girl." "There's that suspicion you might not have done that bit of research that would be crucial. I'm trying to make myself enough like that person so that it doesn't become distracting."
For his performance, Jones reaped his first Golden Globe bid, contending in the category of Best TV Movie/Miniseries Actor. The film and its leading lady Sienna Miller are also in the running on Jan. 13.
"The Girl" focuses on Hitchcock's relationship with Tippi Hedren while making the films "The Birds" and "Marnie" in the early 1960s. Hedren was intimately involved in this new project which aired on the premium network in late October, just weeks before the theatrical release "Hitchcock" starring Anthony Hopkins and Helen Mirren. That film follows the struggle to bring "Psycho" to the screen, which was just before the events in "The Girl."
Jones is no stranger to competing projects about real life figures. He portrayed author Truman Capote in the 2006 movie "Infamous," released just a few weeks after the major success of "Capote," which won Philip Seymour Hoffman the Best Actor Oscar.
As Jones recalled, "Their film came out, and it garnered not just the awards but it got so much attention. It obviously killed our film in the box office. That's a great, great shame. It's been really heartening to know that the film has continued to live on through a lot of affection on DVD and as it's been played and discovered by people."
He revealed that his excellent reviews "kickstarted" his career, leading to a steady stream of roles in films like "Frost/Nixon," "My Week with Marilyn," "Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy," and "The Hunger Games." He also delivered a compelling CGI performance as Dobby the house elf in several of the "Harry Potter" films.
