All My Children One Life to Live online TV Emmy news

Now that "One Life to Live" and "All My Children" are off TV and heading to webcast, we know where they stand in the current Daytime Emmy competition. "One Life to Live" is in the running because it aired sufficient episodes on TV in the eligibility period, but not "All My Children."

But what about next year when both shows will exist exclusively on line? Will they be permitted to compete alongside their sister soaps in the same categories?

"No determination as of yet," David Michaels, chief of Daytime at the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences, tells Gold Derby. "This will be a discussion at the next award committee meeting."

If this question pertained to the Primetime Emmys (which are administered by that other TV academy, the one based in Los Angeles), there would be no mystery. Program delivery system doesn't matter. Broadcast television competes against webcasts, streaming, etc. Contenders are merely classified by category. Therefore, Netflix's "House of Cards" will compete for Best Drama Series in the current Emmy derby opposite "Breaking Bad," "Mad Men" and "Downton Abbey."

But NATAS has different rules and they're tricky. The Daytime Emmys Awards Committee has some deep thinking to do and the discussion could get dicey since the panel is comprised of executives of both TV academies, which have clashing views. However, NATAS has the final say since it has primary responsibility for Daytime, News and Sports Emmys.

This year's Daytime Emmy nominations will be announced May 1, with the 40th anniversary edition of the kudos taking place sometime in June.
