The 38th annual Student Academy Awards are now accepting entries online. American student filmmakers have till April 1 to submit their films in four categories -- alternative, animation, narrative and documentary -- while foreign fare is due March 24.

Last year, the academy received 497 films from students at 122 colleges and universities. They were culled down to 37 finalists from 21 schools which were viewed by Academy members at special screenings. Gold, silver and bronze medal awards, along with accompanying cash prizes of $5,000, $3,000 and $2,000, respectively, were presented in each of four categories. A record 61 entries from 36 countries contended for the honorary foreign film award last year. This year, up to three foreign entries will receive medals.

All the winning filmmakers will be brought to Los Angeles for a week of industry-related activities and social events that will culminate in the award ceremony on June 11 at the academy’s Samuel Goldwyn Theater. Student Academy Awards winners have gone on to earn 40 Oscar nominations and win seven Academy Awards. The most recent of these was Pete Docter, who co-directed the 2009 best animated feature "Up." In addition, Gregg Helvey, a 2009 Student Academy Award winner, also helmed the live-action short nominee "Kavi" last year.
