Green Day vs. Stephen Sondheim x 2 for Musical Show Album Grammy

Four-time Grammy champs Green Day brought their 2004 Best Rock Album "American Idiot" to Broadway last season. While they were ineligible to contend at the Tony Awards for Best Score, the group is in contention at this year's Grammy Awards for the cast recording.

Among their competition is Broadway lyricist-composer Stephen Sondheim whose shows have won this award a half dozen times ("Company," 1970; "A Little Night Music," 1973; "Sweeney Todd," 1979; "Sunday In The Park With George," 1984; "Into The Woods," 1988; and "Passion" 1994). In addition, Sondheim won Song of the Year in 1975 when Judy Collins recorded a hit version of "Send in the Clowns" from "A Little Night Music." This year, Sondheim contends for both the revival of that show led by Tony champ Catherine Zeta-Jones and the career retrospective "Sonheim on Sondheim."

The other two nominees are "Fela!" -- a celebration of the life of Nigerian musician Fela Anikulapo-Kuti -- and the revival of the 1969 tuner "Promises Promises" starring Sean Hayes and Kristen Chenoweth.
